Porthleven Town Band has welcomed a new musical director, saying members “could not be happier” with the appointment.
Former band member and local boy Tom Bassett, 23, has now become the permanent musical director on his return to the port, after completing a first-class BMus honours degree at Birmingham Conservatoire and then a master of music degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, from which he graduated last year.
He played with Porthleven Town Band between 2000 and 2004, on percussion and Eb Bass.
As a composer and conductor Mr Bassett has had the chance to conduct many ensembles playing his own music in venues such as the Wigmore Hall, London and the Royal Albert Hall.
Band chairman and trustee Lynne Lees said: “On behalf of the committee, trustees and players I welcome Tom home to Porthleven Town Band and I anticipate a long, exciting and successful future.
“We have all been impressed with the work Tom has done with us recently and the band voted for him to be appointed musical director by an overwhelming majority.”
She said that Mr Bassett was now director for both the training and senior bands and added: “We are delighted that he has agreed to work with us.
“As chairman, and an eighth generation Porthlevener, I am passionate about Porthleven Town Band, its longevity and the happiness of our players. Tom, a fellow proud Porthlevener, is someone who shares this vision and I am confident that we will all work together in an atmosphere of harmony and industry.”
Mr Bassett, a former Porthleven Primary and Helston School student, said: “I'm delighted to be taking up the challenge of leading Porthleven Town Band into a new era. I have several new aims for the band in the next few years.
“I would like to thank the band for their support.”
The band plays outside the Harbour Inn every Sunday, weather permitting, at 7.30pm.
