Exeter Uni 22 - Camborne 59
Camborne RFC gave a performance full of power and purpose to complete the double over Exeter University running in no fewer than nine tries in a comprehensive victory, writes Martin Symons.
Try machine Ben Priddey bagged a nap hand of five touchdowns to take his season’s total to a remarkable 30 scores.
Despite facing the wind the Cherry & Whites started the game strongly with wing Jack Davis and full back Harry Larkins both going close early on before finally scrum half Will Tanswell wriggled over at the posts for Josh Matavesi to convert.
Though the Students soon hit back with a penalty, ‘Town’ stretched the lead with hooker Priddey’s score from a catch and drive improved by centre Matavesi still inside the first quarter.
Trailing 3-14 the home side cut the deficit with a converted try but on the half hour Priddey was once again in pole position to steer his forwards over to dot down.
Exeter were looking to move the ball at every opportunity and a line break led to a converted try to cut the deficit to only two points at 17-19 as the interval neared.
On the halftime whistle Camborne won a scrum penalty which was punted to the corner and from the lineout Priddey completed his hat trick bagging the try bonus point in the process.
Almost from the restart the visitors moved down field and the Students were reduced to 13 men with a second yellow card. Camborne opted for the scrum and drove for the line winning a penalty try as the home pack gave way.
Once restored to a full complement the Students again hit back with their third try, reducing the arrears to 22-31 with half an hour remaining.
Matavesi’s shrewd kicking kept the home side pinned deep in their own territory and from another impressive ‘Town’ scrum on 56 minutes a second penalty try was inevitably awarded.
Wing Jack Kessell’s strong run set up another great attack for the Cherry & Whites and when the ball was recycled wide on the right popular prop Sam Rodman was on hand to receive the scoring pass and dive over. Matavesi’s majestic touchline conversion took his team out of sight at 22-45.
Going into the closing stage the visitors continued to dominate and Priddey picked up his fourth try from another catch and drive with Matavesi again converting.
Late on Priddey again peeled off a driving maul with purpose to go over for his fifth touchdown this time converted by centre Adam Long rounding off a fine display that sees Camborne climb to sixth spot in the National Two West table.
