Saturday saw 100 Falmouth Golf Club members compete for the Bearne Cup, writes Keith Rashleigh.
Ian Moore won on the day win a fine net 66. He needed something special to happen coming to the final three holes and sure enough he got his wish by carding birdies at the 16th and 18th holes to win by one stroke from a posse of players.
Runner up was Martin McGee with a net 67 (36 & 31) including a birdie at the 11th hole. Third on the same score was Brian Craig (35 & 32) including birdies at the 11th and 16th holes. The best gross round was by Harry Drewett with a 75 including 10 straight pars followed by a birdie at the 16th.
Twos were scarce, with just five on the day, coming from Graham Buck and Oliver Dobell at the 2nd, Grant Nicholls 7th, Ian Moore and Nick Brown 18th.
There were 59 birdies in total with 24 of them coming at the 11th hole. The easiest hole on the day was the 11th which averaged + 0.17 and the most difficult was the 5th which averaged + 1.70.
A week earlier the Bray Cup was played for at the club, with 105 members taking part. The cup was won by Ryan Boott playing off 12 with a fantastic score of Nett 65 with 11 pars and one impressive birdie on the difficult 373-yard uphill 14th.
Runner up was James Dempsey with a net 68 including two birdies at the 11th and 14th holes, beating David Hay on countback. Fourth also with a net 68 was Justin Ashburn who birdied the 8th and fifth also with a net 68 was Pete Brierley.
Best gross score was again posted by Ben Browning with a 73, which considering the tough conditions was a great round including a birdie at the 6th. “Hole of the Day” came from six handicapper Charlie Bowman who carded an “Eagle” at the par 5 16th.
There were twos recorded by Malcolm “Bert” Coulls, Harry Drewett and Jack Dempsey at the 4th; Steve Thomas, Andy Morris and Robert Oliver at the 7th; Neil Dickinson, Gary Muchan and Luke Geach at the 150-yard par 3. There were 58 birdies in total.
The easiest hole on the day was the short par 4 11th, which averaged + 0.44 and the most challenging hole was the 14th which averaged +1.77.
