Falmouth Golf Club played both their County A and B quarter finals at Truro Golf Club on Sunday, writes Phil Jones.
Our County A side were up against a very experienced team from Carlyon Bay Golf Club in this scratch foursomes competition. Ben Browning and Ash Bennett led Falmouth out, followed by Michael Clark and Matt Fox, Falmouth's new head greenkeeper. Falmouth's final pairing was Harry Drewett and Archie Fox.
It was tough going as expected and after the first six holes Falmouth were two down in the first two matches and three down in the third. After 12 holes Falmouth were showing the never give in attitude that the club has being renowned for over the last few years, with Browning and Bennett and Clark and Fox reducing the deficit to one shot, while Drewett and Fox, who at one point were five down, had brought their match back to two shots.
Unfortunately, Falmouth struggled within the tight confines of Truro's course, with Carlyon Bay winning all three matches three and one, two and one and two and one respectively. Our County A side will take some valuable experience with them from this fixture which will stand them in good stead for the Maxam Cup in August and of course the Cornwall Team Championship in October.
Falmouth's County B side were up against a formidable Perranporth side, which contained players from their President's side who beat Falmouth in the semi final earlier this year. Falmouth's captain Phil Jones had a couple of changes enforced upon him, with the unavailability of Conor Bowman and an unfortunate late withdrawal of Luke Geach due to a back injury.
Will Sercombe came in to partner Nick Hodges allowing Chris North to team up with Rob Connolly and James Dempsey came in to play with Callum Davis.
It was Davis and Dempsey that got Falmouth underway, followed by Hodges and Sercombe, and Connolly and North. After the first six holes Falmouth were four up in the first match but three down in the other two matches. Falmouth needed to up their game to avoid both teams being knocked out at the quarter final stage.
After 12 holes it started to look a little better for the Falmouth side, with Davis and Dempsey consolidating their lead going four up with six to play and Connolly and North reducing their deficit from being three to two shots down.
Once again it was the never give in attitude of Hodges and Sercombe who had managed to come back from four down to be within one shot of their opponents. Falmouth won the first point of the two required with Davis and Dempsey closing out their match on the Par 3 16th with a four and two win.
Hodges and Sercombe managed to get ahead of their opponents for the first time in their match going one up on 16. Then on the par four 17th I can only describe what was textbook golf. Sercombe hit a massive drive right down the middle of the fairway where Hodges followed up with a superb wedge shot to within five feet of the pin, which Sercombe then sank his putt for birdie to send Falmouth through to the semi finals.
Connolly and North battled back well in their match, securing a well earned half point on the 18th. The final result was Falmouth GC 2.5, Perranporth GC 0.5.
Falmouth's B team will now go onto play at Mullion Golf Club on May 18 to try and retain the County B title for a historic third year in a row.
