Falmouth Golf Club began its winter knockout campaign on Sunday against Bude & North Cornwall GC in the Cornish Bowl.

The venue was The Point at Polzeath, a fantastic course which is improving year on year.

The first pairing out for Falmouth were Ronnie May and Pete Lewis, followed by Tom and Adam Pryor, Chris Pellow and Glen Fortune, Andy Parry and Mike Davies, with Richard Harris and FGC men's captain Phil Jones last to tee off.

May and Lewis got Falmouth off to a great start, going 4 up after 6 holes and eventually winning their match 6&4 to send Falmouth 1-0 up in the best of 5.

The rest of the matches were much tighter affairs, with the Pryor brothers coming back from 2 down to level their match after 18 holes, taking them up the 19th, which they won to send Falmouth 2-0 up.

The third match also went down to the wire, with Pellow and Fortune giving 3 shots to their opponents, just losing out on the 18th to bring the score back to 2-1 in Falmouth's favour.

Parry and Davies were also in a battle, whose match finished level after 18 holes, so they also had to go up the 19th.

However, it was on the 17th hole where the match was decided, where Harris and Jones were also involved in another tight match.

The pairing were one up after 16 holes, which left Jones needing to hole his putt on 17 to win not only the game but the match, which he did, allowing Parry and Davies to agree to halve their match, giving Falmouth a 3½ to 1½ victory and will now go on to face Truro GC in round 2.

Thanks must go out to all of the support Falmouth had on the day, especially those from the club's ladies' section, for making the effort to make the journey up to Polzeath to cheer the team on.
