AFTER becoming an Olympic sport, squash is seeing a positive trend of new players taking to the court in six active clubs from Penzance to Bude.
This month, Cornwall had a team of 24 juniors heading up to Cheltenham for Stage 1 of the England Squash Junior Inter County Championship.
Playing some of the top players across the region, the matches were always going to be tough. However, our team competed incredibly well with a number of strong performances across the age groups.
The Cornwall Junior Coach, Jamie Lang, said: “Some stand out mentions go the girls squad, being the first to represent Cornwall at an inter-county event – massive well done!
“Also to rising star Lewis Vinton, who won all of his matches over the weekend – a fantastic achievement. Well done to everyone for taking part, it’s a massive achievement for Cornwall and it’s only going to get bigger from now on, as squash is featuring in the Olympics in LA28.”
Matt Harford, Cornwall Squash & Racketball chairman, said: “A special mention to Jamie and Alan, the two coaches and team managers. Without your dedication this wouldn't have happened. And well done to the various club coaches for all of the training hours put into the young players.
"Finally, thanks to the team sponsor S&S Carpentry Contractors Ltd and to Archbishop Benson Primary School for allowing the squad to use their minibus!"
Squash was proposed by the LA28 Organising Committee for inclusion at the Olympic Games in 2028. This momentous decision provides squash’s world-class athletes the opportunity to compete on the biggest sporting stage in the world, with two medal events – men’s and women’s singles competitions.
There are six England Squash clubs in Cornwall who you can join, obtain coaching and play with a variety of players. There are also a number of courts across Cornwall for a social game. The clubs are: Bodmin, Bude, Falmouth, Newquay, Penzance and Truro.
