The start of September marks to start of a new Short Mat Bowls season, with a programme of events planned through the winter months.

Locally the first event will be an Open Morning followed in the afternoon by the County Team Trials, both at Carnmoggas, St Austell on Sunday, September 22. Players who have not yet responded to team manager Luke Jolly are urged to do so as soon as possible.

A further Open Morning will take place at Carnmoggas on Saturday, September 28 with a County Team practice during the afternoon ahead of Cornwall welcoming Dorset to Carnmoggas for the opening fixture of the season on Sunday, September 29.

A week later, on Sunday, October 6 both County Teams will be travelling for away fixtures, the Premier Team to face Somerset at Wedmore and the A Team to take on Hampshire in Winchester.

Sunday, October 13 will see teams of ten representing each of the four administrative areas of the CCSMBA in the first of three rounds of the Inter Area League at Carnmoggas.

On Sunday, October 27 the first qualifying competition for County Championship honours takes place at Carnmoggas with the County Fours entrants reduced to eight teams to go through to the finals.

  • Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20 - English Short Mat Bowling Association/TLH Open Pairs & Fours.
  • Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20 - Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open.
  • Saturday, October 26 - English Short Mat Bowling Association Open Fours Summer League.

The local Summer League has concluded with St Newlyn East defeating Blisland 34-18 over the two leg final.

The first leg on Thursday, August 15 saw Sandra Worton, John Worton and Steve Smith for St Newlyn East take a 28-5 win against Blisland’s Marx Burden, Rita Hancock and Keith Matthews.

In the return match at Blisland on Tuesday, August 20 Henry Teague, Rosemary Young and Mike Webster for Blisland won 13-6 against an unchanged St Newlyn East trio.

Luxulyan Open Triples One of Cornwall’s longest established Short Mat Bowling Clubs hosted a charity competition raising funds for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Heli 2 appeal on Sunday, September 1 with 16 teams from across the county taking part.

Drawn in four groups of four, teams from St Keverne, Blisland, Landrake and Helston progressed to the knockout stages.

In the semi finals Blisland (Rosemary Young, Max Burden & Rita Hancock) won 14-6 against St Keverne (Eileen Nowell, Alan Williams & Steve Nowell). Helston (Brenda Benney, Vivyan Benney & Percy Tripp) won 9-5 against Landrake (Kate Richards (Luxulyan), Dianne Shorthouse & Dennis Shorthouse).

The final went the way of Blisland winning 16-4.
