The Capio Eggs competed at North Petherton in the NP7s for the second year running on Saturday, and this year took along the new Eggs Academy squad for good measure.
Both sides were drawn in tough Groups, with the young Academy side facing a daunting challenge against St Pauls Pirates (winners of Frome7s a week previously) and Cobalt Crusaders (Exeter Chiefs Academy).
The Academy boys did themselves proud in finishing fourth in a Group of five teams, including an impressive 38-25 win over Kowboys, which took them into a Bowl semi-final with Castle Cary - which they duly won 29-12 playing some superb sevens.
This set them up with a Bowl Final against Taunton Tourists, and after gifting Taunton some soft tries the Academy found themselves 0-24 behind just into the second half.
Stunned into a response, the Eggs Academy rallied and got back to 17-24 before running out of time. A great debut for the Eggs Academy, and a sign that the Eggs have a great new crop of players in the making.
The Capio Eggs had a slightly easier Group and overcame North Petherton, Seahawk Islanders and Newton Rams with a 100% group record, taking them into a very hard Cup quarter-final with the EU Chiefs (Exeter University/Exeter Chiefs Academy) run by Ricky Pellow.
The Eggs gave it their all in a 14-24 defeat and were gutted to give away a couple of soft tries that left them just too much catching up.
Another quarter-final exit left the players and management feeling frustrated and a little hard done by, but generally happy that the squad is building with new faces blending with regular Eggs such as captain Taron Peacock, who again led the side brilliantly and broke opponents lines continuously all day long.
Next up for the Eggs is one of the marque tournaments on the UK circuit, Westcountry7s at Keynsham nr Bath, on June 15th. The Eggs will compete at Elite level (against British Army, Netherlands, Impact (France), French Universities, St Pauls Pirates and other top end sevens outfits), while also entering the hugely competitive open tournament on the same day.
