Rugby, and Cornwall will play Lancashire at Twickenham in the final of the county championships after beating current holders Hertfordshire 41-29 at the Recreation Ground.

The win ends 14 years of hurt for the Black and Gold, who last played at the home of rugby in the 2008 when they were beaten by Northumberland in the final of the county shield.

Cornwall, cheered on by over 3,000 supporters in glorious sunshine, started brightly.

Try-machine Sam Hocking's purple patch continued as he and Greg Goodfellow helped the home side to a 17-12 lead at the break - Sam Winter and Stefan Liebenberg put the points on the board for Hertfordshire.

And soon after the restart Cornwall surged further ahead with tries from Richard Bright and Jake Murphy.

Hertfordshire hit back with two tries more from Liebenberg, but Paul Thirlby's injury-time score put the result beyond doubt, sending the home fans into raptures at the final whistle.

In cricket, Falmouth's fine start to the season continued on Saturday as they kicked off their premier league campaign with a win at highly-fancied Callington.

Stefan Churcher (32), Richard Kellow (38), and Antony Angove (32) helped the visitors chase down Callington's total of 164 for 8 off 47 overs for the loss of just five wickets.

In football, Wendron Reserves beat St Ives to claim the Lockhart Cup at Kelloway Parc.

St Ives went a goal up in the first half, but their failure to defend set pieces allowed Wendron back into the game with two goals after the break enough to clinch the win.

Meanwhile West Cornwall ensured Illogan RBL's miserable run in cup finals continued after beating the favourites 4-3 on penalties.

Illogan battled back from two goal down to lead 3-2. But in a frantic finale the two sides traded goals, with the score finishing 4-4 after 90 minutes.

And after neither side could break the deadlock during extra-time the game headed to penalties, with West Cornwall claiming a 4-3 win.
