To suitably finish off an extended rugby season, Alan Paver's eagerly awaited testimonial match - Alan Paver Select XV versus Cornwall's County Championship XV - takes place at the Mennaye Field this coming Sunday.
The organisers have confirmed that admission on the day is just £5 (no tickets available in advance), with the gates to be open at 1pm in readiness for the 2.30pm kick-off.
Before the match Penzance & Newlyn RFC's under 7s and under 8s will participate in a tag tournament, there will be a hog roast and BBQ, the popular Cadgwith Singers will be present, plus hopefully the Falmouth Marine Band. Also, in the 'Westholme' clubhouse, commencing at approximately 6.30pm, the BT Experience band will be performing live.
And who are the players expected to appear for Alan's side? Well, the list includes names such as Tim Cowley, Viliami Ma'asi, Nick Adams, Dan Seal, Ian Nimmo, Ceiron Thomas, Rhodri McAtee, Paul Gadsdon, Andy Birkett, Brian Andrew, James Owen, Mark Ireland, Simon Whatling and Pale Nonu, plus 'Albion' associated players Graham Dawe, Danny Thomas, Wayne Reed and Keni Fisilau.
Joining the Pirates from Plymouth Albion in June, 2002, 'Paves', now aged 35, has gained enormous respect during his time in Cornwall, and deservedly so. Indeed, he is held in high regard not just by his fellow players and supporters but also by other clubs he has played against.
During this past season Alan reached the 300 games milestone for the Pirates, which is a truly remarkable achievement in the professional era. Also, in November, he was selected for the RFU Championship XV that faced the might of the Maori All Blacks. Playing in that game was a truly tremendous honour, along with fellow Pirates Gavin Cattle, who skippered the side, and flanker Phil Burgess.
Born in Rotherham, and having previously played for Vale of Lune and Plymouth Albion, besides numerous personal highlights playing-wise, Alan is someone who has also been a most outstanding contributor off the field, and he has won numerous club awards, including those which exemplify his commitment, sportsmanship and community spirit.
