The Men’s Triples round robin competition, round two, was played on Sunday morning in freak weather conditions. The morning started in quite unexpected mild conditions, as the overnight gales had subsided.

There were strong gusts of wind, but generally it was quite pleasant conditions as blue skies with light high clouds and mild temperatures greeted the players.

However, as the morning progressed, conditions deteriorated as the wind increased in strength as hail showers bombarded the players.

At the final couple of ends of the morning’s play, heavy hail and sleet showers swept across the green in waves and eventually the whole green was covered in pure white hail and snow. Who said bowls was a game for the hardy people?

It proved the men playing were made of some strong material as everyone finished their games. In these conditions there was bound to have some freak results.

The Packets, early league leaders, skipped by Paul Bobin, David Hay 2 and John Bishop at lead kept us their really good form and showed they are a tem to be reckoned with and are making a determined effort to win this round robin, which they won two years ago.

In their first game they played Stithians Ranchers, skipped by Harry Barnes, David Rickard 2 and Phil Matthews leading. After five ends both teams were level at 4-4 and it was the Ranchers that then went ahead to take an 8-4 lead after seven ends.

But a determined finish from the Packets saw them tie the game at 8-8 with only the last end to play. After two or three measurers for shot, it was eventually decided the Packets had won the end leaving them 9-8 winners.

In their second game against the Frostbites, who were skipped by Tony Nancholas, Ernie Eva 2 and Colin Smith at lead.

The Packets took an early lead of 4-0 after three ends. The Frostbites then opened their scoring with two singles to be 2-6 in arrears after six ends.

The Packets with two successive threes secured the game and went on to win 16-3, collecting six shots on the last end and stay well clear undefeated at the top of the league.

The Frostbites in their second game against the Waisters, skipped by Richard Rowe, Mike Pheby 2 and John Maunder at lead found themselves all square at 7-7 after seven ends.

The Waisters then scored three shots on the eighth end, but the Frostbites came back with two shots on the penultimate end. Tony Nancholas, Frostbite’s skip drew shot bowl with the last bowl of the game to tie the game 10-10 - one point to each team.

In their second game the Waisters played the Jets, skipped by John Jones, Melville Angel 2 and Paddy McMullen at lead. The Waisters made a great start to take a 7-0 lead after four ends.

The Jets scored one shot on the fifth end, but it was to be their last scoring shot as the Waisters finished the game off in impressive style to win 15-1.

The Jets in their second game played the Ditchers, skipped by John Darling, Terry Channon 2 and Russell Dawes at lead. After eight ends both teams were level at 7-7, but it was the ditchers who held their nerve to take the last two ends 1-2 to win the game 10-7.

The Ditchers in their second game had to play their fellow team mates, Helston’s Blue Anchors, who had previously ran them very close in the league.

The Blue Anchors, skipped by Walter Polglaze, Roger Leech 2 and Robin Bray at lead proceeded to teach their fancied Ditchers a lesson and completely outbowled them in all aspects of the game, so much so, that the Ditchers could only score one shot on the last end as the Blue Anchors revelled in their win 11-1 to take second place in the league table.

In their second game the Blue Anchors were against the Miners, skipped by Barry Jones, Geoff Stephens 2 and T Atkins at lead. The Blue Anchors went into an early lead 4-0 after three ends and later made it 8-3 after six ends. Two shots from the Miners brought them closer, but six shots for the Blue Anchors finished the game off for them as the Blue Anchors went on to win 15-6.

The Miners then played the Ranchers and the Miners took an early lead of 5-0 after three ends. However, the Ranchers hit back to level the scores at 5-5 after five ends. The Miners then hit a purple patch to score 4-1-3 to take a 12-5 lead after eight ends and although the Ranchers scored three shots on the penultimate end. The Miners finished the game off with two shots on the last end to win the game 14-8. An excellent game for the Miners.
