Penryn 7 Devonport Services 3
Penryn returned to winning ways after nearly 5 weeks without a game in a low scoring encounter at home to Devonport Services.
A solitary converted try from Will Payne ensured Penryn recorded their first win against the Devon outfit for nearly 3 years.
You wouldn't have known the Borough hadn't played in over a month and been limited in their training, as they started much the brighter against the visitors against a stiff breeze and surprisingly good pitch.
Good early carrying and driving from the forwards set a good platform for a strong looking back line. Services showed their intentions too but Penryn always looked the more likely to break through. So it proved, as some fine work from the Penryn eight created enough space for Will Payne to finish well on the outside. Horton converted and it seemed as though the floodgates would open.
Devonport had other ideas though, as they hit back with a penalty goal after a rare foray into Penryn territory. That was it for the first half and Penryn would turn around with a strong wind in their favour.
Unfortunately, Penryn could not find a way through and the score would remain the same.
The home side dominated territory and possession but lacked the killer instinct to finish off the visitors. Despite a few hairy moments towards the end, the Penryn defence was resolute and Services never really looked like crossing the whitewash.
Overall, a win was the most important thing to take from the afternoon and there was a sense the visitors were very happy with their losing bonus point. Penryn travel to Bude this weekend for a re-arranged fixture.
