Penryn recorded a much needed victory with a bonus point to boot after a disappointing run of recent results, against a struggling Wellington team.

Penryn returned to the Memorial Ground after a difficult fortnight on the road desperately needing a win to climb back up into the higher regions of Western Counties West, and they did exactly that. 

The Borough were visibly tense in the opening exchanges, but looked dangerous and came close to opening the scoring on several occasions.

Both teams missed early penalties to open the scoring, but Penryn always looked the more likely.

The home scrum was dominant and Wellington were barely able to win their own ball at the set piece, being forced back at a rate of knots by the powerful Penryn eight.

This laid the platform for the backs to put together a move that saw Will Paine crash through a gap after coming off his wing to open the scoring with a fine Penryn try. Jake Seviour added the conversion.

The game was an ill-disciplined affair, with both sides losing a man to the bin before the break for persistent infringements, and Penryn even more unfortunately losing yet another  player to injury in the shape of Adam Hughes. A disjointed first forty closed with the Borough leading 7-0.

The second half started ominously for the home side. As they aimed to see out the remainder of the sin bin period without conceding, the visitors struck a big blow to the Borough.

A well-worked try for Wellington left the opportunity for the scores to be tied, but the missed conversion meant that the gap was still only two as Penryn returned to their full compliment.

Determined not to let the opportunity slip, Penryn upped the tempo and began to produce the kind of rugby they have been threatening since before the turn of the year.

The forwards continued their domination over the travelling pack, and much like in the first half this laid the platform for a second try for Paine, who crashed over once more. And although Seviour couldn't convert this time, Penryn regained control on the scoreboard their dominance reflected.

Penryn’s intentions for the rest of the afternoon were clear, as they spurned several kickable penalties in a bid to go for more tries, clearly thinking a bonus point was in the offing.

They soon justified their adventure, when a quick tap penalty and several charges from the home forwards put the ball on a plate for centre Lewis Vague, who sliced through to score out wide and surely seal the points for the Borough.

Seviour missed the conversion but Penryn were finally safe. There was still time for Penryn to add a fourth try, and they did so in style with the last play of the game. Ben Jordan launched a counter attack down the left wing and superb support play led to Seviour squeezing into the corner for a bonus point earned on the back of positive expansive play.

As Seviour took a well earned breather from the try, brother Andrew nonchalantly stroked over the touchline conversion to add gloss to a fine afternoons work from the Borough.

Penryn look to continue their improved form at home this Saturday, with a re-arranged fixture against promotion chasing Kingsbridge.
