Boxers from Falmouth and Penryn Amateur Boxing Club enjoyed mixed fortunes at a recent tournament held in Dorset.
Brett Ralph and Ben Ambrose travelled to Poole, to compete in the tournament, which was held in the Lighthouse centre.
After a succesful last outing, Brett came across an extremely challenging southpaw in T Kellet from Plymouth, who was fast on his feet and kept his distance to outbox Brett, who kept pressing forward to put on pressure, but just could not pin Kellet down.
Brett did not stop chasing throughout the bout, but in the end lost to a very well-drilled and disciplined boxer.
Meanwhile Ben Ambrose fought Poole Dorset Amateur Boxing Club’s Daniel Ford, who had won his last three fights.
Even with training from his uncle, ex-international Gilbert Ambrose, it was set to be a very tough test for Ben.
The first round started with both men throwing big shots, but Ben’s were more accurate, and mid-way through the first round, Ben rocked Ford with a right hand, left hook combination.
Ford recovered well, refusing to go down, and came back strongly, putting Ben under pressure with strong punches.
Ben moved well, making Ford miss, before landing more solid shots and forcing his opponent to receive a standing eight second count towards the end of the first, finishing the round well in command.
Ambrose continued to dominate the second round, out boxing Ford, who, despite showing great determination, was unable to find a way past Ben’s speed and power.
A final combination from Ambrose, catching Ford flush on the chin, was followed up by strong body shots, which proved too much for Ford, and the referee stopped the contest at the end of the second round.
This was easily Ben’s best performance so far, with plenty of skills, power and determination on show, as well as being the only opponent to have stopped Ford to date.
Falmouth and Penryn Amateur Boxing Club trains at the Dracena Centre on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and welcomes new members hoping to compete or keep fit.
