St Day 5 Wendron United 2
(Jolly's Cornwall Combination League Cup semi-final)
Beleaguered St Day booked their place in the final of the Jolly's Cornwall Combination League Cup with a thrilling 5-2 victory over Wendron United at Clifton Parc.
St Day, who were allowed to remain in the competition despite being hit with a 21 point penalty in the league for fielding inelligible players, will now play Mullion in the final at Gala Parc on Easter Sunday.
Wendron were forced to start Ryan Tresidder in goal after the late withdrawl of goalkeeper Jeremy Brown - one of several first team players unavailable for the game.
And the 'dron duly suffered a nightmare start, with the Saints going three up inside 20 minutes.
Dan Ellis scored direct from a corner, before Gavin Boon added a second and Jason Robertson nodded in a third.
Luke Wort pulled a goal back for Wendron just before the break to hand Paul Murray's side a lifeline, but after the restart United defender Kirk Davies misjudged a clearance and headed a cross into the back of his own net to restore St Day's three goal lead, and give the 'dron a mountain to climb.
They continued to battle away, Steve Brewer pulling one back for Wendron to keep hopes of an unlikely comeback alive.
But with Wendron chasing the game gaps appeared at the back, and St Day hit them on the break late on to seal the win, Boon racing clear to score his second of the game.
St Day: Rowe, Robertson, Witts, Day, Taylor, L Ellis, D Ellis, Tolley, Hogarth, Pullen, Boon.
Wendron: Tresidder, M Roberts, Davies, Madely, Rowberry, Mulroy, Brewer, Searle, Care, Wort, J Roberts.
