PART two of the Sunday morning Men's Triples League, took place at the Falmouth Bowling Club under threatening grey skies with a forecast of bad weather which fortunately did not materialise until the afternoon.
Top of the league Chacewater/ Falmouth Frostbites, fielding their strongest squad skipped by Chris Instance, Ernie Eva at No 2 and Tony Nancholas leading, were against second in the league Falmouth's Packets, skipped by Paul Bobin, Walter Clark at No 2 and John Bishop leading.
This promised to be a close game and so it proved to be as the Packets had the better start and led 10-7 after 11 ends. After 14 ends the Frostbites had drawn level 10-10 and on the very next end picked up four shots. Now clicking into gear the Frostbites kept the pressure on and this signalled the end for the Packets who were not able to score again as the Frostbites pressed home their advantage to win 19-10 and stay on top of the league with a healthy four point margin over the rest of the field.
Stithians Ranchers, skipped by Harry Barnes, were against Helston's Dancers, skipped by Russell Dawes, who moved into a 10-2 lead early in the game which included a count of six on the fifth end.
The Ranchers then hit back to take 1-2-1-1-4 and take an 11-10 lead after ten ends. The Ranchers continued their run of success with a 15-11 lead after 15 ends with Harry Barnes bowling particularly well and saving his team on numerous ends.
Although the Dancers won the last three ends they just couldn't catch the Ranchers who won by one shot 15-14 and go into second place in the league.
Falmouth's Waisters, skipped by Ron Medlyn with Paul Jordan at No 2 and John Maunder leading, had the best of the early exchanges against Constantine's Odd Bod 1's skipped by Steve O'Donoghue, Ron Curnow at No 2 and Richard Finch leading, as the Waisters took an 18-2 lead after eight ends with the help of a count of seven on the seventh end. The Waisters picked up another seven on the 11th end and raced away to a 30-11 lead and so pull up to third place in the league.
Carnon's Cavaliers skipped by David Thomas with Mike West at No 2 and Peter George leading, got away to a good start to lead 5-1 after six ends against Mawnan/Truro's Rustlers skipped by John Bullen with Malcolm Dearnley at No 2 and David Edgecombe leading. The Rustlers suddenly found some form and with a run of 2-4-1-3-2-1-1 took a 15-5 lead to completely turn the game around and they went on to win 16-11.
Redruth/Falmouth Nomads skipped by John Jones, got away to a good start to lead 6-0 against Mawnan's Brass Monkies, skipped by Richard Ragg. The game then settled down to a ding-dong finish and after 15 ends the score was 12-12.
With the game now in the balance it was 18-18 with one end to play and it was left to the Nomads skip John Jones to draw the winning bowl with his very last bowl to win the game 19-18.
Penryn's Hasbeens, skipped by Godfrey Curnow, with Brian Gerry at No 2 and Dennis Nicholls leading, took an 11-3 lead after six ends which included a seven on the fourth end against Constantine's Odd Bod 2's, skipped by Phil Law with Bob Mynett at No 2 and Anton Hawley leading. The Odd Bod 2's pulled back to only 9-11 down after nine ends, but the Hasbeens captured the next four ends to lead 15-9 after 13 ends.
Despite a brave fightback by the Odd Bod 2's they just could not catch the Hasbeens who narrowly won 16-15.
n The Falmouth green was visited this week by the youth of Constantine. On Wednesday, six youngsters aged 14-18 visited the club in order to gain some experience on an artificial green and on Tuesday nine under 14s arrived.
All the young bowlers did extremely well and found the green to their liking. Attended by the Constantine seniors, Terry Jeffries and his wife, and Bob Mynett and his wife, all have done a great job with these youngsters, who are very keen players.
The boys and girls are all from the village and the bowling club are hoping to obtain a grant to build an artificial green at Constantine.
This will provide the village with a great future in bowls and the members of this small club are very proud of their juniors, rightly so.
If only all the clubs could follow suit it would ensure the future of the great game of bowls in this division and Cornwall.
