A MAGNIFICENT fundraising effort by the ladies of Falmouth Golf Club has resulted in nearly £500 being raised for the lady captain's nominated charity, Shelterbox, in less than a month.

The money will be donated immediately so that a Shelterbox can be dispatched straight away.

After their Christmas lunch, the ladies were treated to a very informative talk by Ian Mundy, a trustee of Shelterbox, about the formation and work of the charity. The lady captain, Hazel Mulcahy gave a special thanks to Janet Thomas and her bell-ringing group, the Fairway Ringers, for raising £200 from bell-ringing engagements and from the sale of Janet's jams and chutneys.

For the first time this year Falmouth Golf Club finally managed to complete a weekend competition. The course has been closed due to the torrential rain, although conditions on Saturday were far from ideal with a howling gale blowing all day and some very heavy showers thrown in. With only six players from a field of 56 managing to break par (71) it showed just how difficult conditions were.

Nick Rogers (Falmouth's professional) and trainee Wayne Brown recorded the best round of the day with a fine nett 67. Russell Weetch also recorded a nett 67, but was pushed into second place after count-back of the back nine.

Falmouth junior captain, James Cloke, was third with a nett 68 and Barry Lawrence was fourth with a nett 69. Falmouth stalwart and club president Mike Goodwin clinched fifth place from Robert Edwards after count-back of the back nine after they both recorded a nett 70.

Results -1, Wayne Brown, nett 67; 2, Russell Weetch, nett 67; 3, James Cloke, nett 68; 4, Barry Lawrence, nett 69; 5, Mike Goodwin, nett 70; 6, Robert Edwards, nett 70.
