Falmouth Town progressed to the quarter finals of the Cornwall Senior Cup for the third successive season, with this decisive victory over a plucky Godolphin side.

The Cornish Guardian East Cornwall Premier League side played well and could have salvaged some pride from the day, but the missed penalty they were awarded deep into stoppage time will be quickly forgotten as Town managed a clean sheet and played well throughout.

The strong winds that swirled around Newquay made sure that the game wasn't going to be pretty, but despite the weather the Godolphin Way pitch was in remarkably good condition.

Town kicked off and were immediatley warded a free kick on the edge of the Godolphin box within the first 20 seconds following a foul on Wayne Hewitt, but Wayne Brown's shot was driven into the wall before being cleared.

The home side had glimpses of the goal in the opening stages, but Joe Tickle competently dealt with everything thrown at him.

Dave McGhee had an effort easily saved before Town broke the deadlock after 11 minutes. Mike Roberts' neat pass set up Andy Bowker whose left footed shot on the turn ended up in the corner of the net with the 'keeper beaten.

Godolphin's retaliation was two shots in quick succession, both from distance. One sailed high over the bar, and the other was a comfortable chest-high catch for Tickle.

There was a scare for the visitors after the home side were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal. Mark Kershaw took it and his curling effort was only just too high as it cleared the bar.

Fergus Nevin, in a raid forward, hit a similarly high shot when he picked up a loose ball from 12 yards out.

Seconds into the second half the shape of the game could have changed dramatically. Godolphin attacked straight from the off and their move ended when Lee Paxton's shot rolled agonisingly across the face of the goal and only centimetres past the post.

In the 57th minute Roberts had a shot from 25 yards and Rob Moss, in goal, made a superb save tipping the ball over the bar.

Town made the most of their slight wind advantage and Lee Beer had a 30 yard free kick comfortably saved by Moss.

Playing a team from a lower league meant Town were in a no win situation. Everybody expects victory and the underdogs occasionally pick up support from the neutrals who urge them on in the hope of a cup shock. Any hope the 100+ people in attendance had was dashed in the 72nd minute when Town added a second goal. A Lee Beer free kick from out on the right flank found McGhee who rose higher than everyone else and headed past the impressive Moss from six yards.

Derek Martin, the Godolphin manager found himself cautioned in the 78th minute for his uncomplimentary comments and a minute later a home dfender was booked for a foul.

With five minutes remaining, Paxton broke through and was again unlucky when he saw his shot shave Tickle's post.

A minute later Town made a change with Scott Rogers replacing Brown.

Paxton was booked in the last minute for a foul and two minutes into stoppage time Town scored a third which truly did wrap up the game. A long free kick from Beer got caught in the wind and Moss could only palm it into the net for an unfortunate own goal.

In the fifth minute of time added on, the home side were awarded a penalty for handball. Paxton took it and his wild effort cleared the bar - and the buildings behind the goal - as it sailed into a neighbouring garden.

The clean sheet and clear three goal advantage makes the game look clear cut, but it wasn't as straightforward as that.

Town, who played Launceston in the postponed eague Cup quarter final yesterday evening, return to league action on Saturday when they visit Newquay in the Carlsberg SWL. Kick off is 2.30 pm.
