FALMOUTH TOWN 0 LAUNCESTON 2
FALMOUTH began the day in three cup quarter finals. By 9.30pm they were left in two after a disappointing display against Launceston. After two good wins, the inconsistency returned and Town exited the South Western League Cup with little more than a whimper.
The visitors went on the attack from the start although it was Town who had the first chance on goal when Mike Roberts struck his shot wide.
It was no real surprise when Launceston took the lead on 17 minutes. A cross from the right from Jon Dawe found Liam Tilley, who scored beat Wayne Hewitt to the ball and heading past a static Joe Tickle from six yards.
The home side tried to create some chances, but more corners came to nothing and in the 27th minute, the game was all but over. Slack defending allowed Richard Hope to waltz through and slide the ball past Tickle from 12 yards.
A minute before the interval, the already ominous signs that it wasn't going to be Falmouth's night were underlined when Carlton Farnham's header rebounded off the bar.
Ten minutes into the second half, Tickle was cautioned for handling the ball outside of the area. Fortunately the free kick came to nothing and the ball was cleared.
Moments later Tilley hit a wild effort which wasn't too far off the mark. From a corner not long after, John James saw his header come back off the bar. A follow up shot was blocked by Lee Beer as Town scrambled to get the ball clear.
The visitors were awarded a free kick for a foul on Tilley but Jamie Ahearn's effort was saved byTickle.
It took until the 65th minute for Paul Hider in the visiting goal to have to make a save. Town were awarded a free kick 25 yards out following a foul, Burchell's free kick appeared to be going wide, but Hider was taking no chances as he pushed it away for a corner.
Ten minutes later he made a vital save to keep the two goal lead intact. Hewitt's neat pass found Bowker whose shot was well blocked .
It was a disappointing last ever SWLC match and it was a surprise that when the records are checked, it was season 1999/2000 that was the last time Town reached the semi final stage, and 1997/98 their last victory.
