DENNIS Annear thinks his Porthleven side need to stop conceding sloppy goals.
The Fishermen came close to causing an upset in the Walter C Parson Cup on Saturday as they pushed South West Peninsula League Premier side Godolphin Atlantic all the way before eventually going out 3-2.
Port felt aggrieved by two offside decisions which ruled out goals for them, but Annear believes they have a bigger problem with gifting opponents easy scores.
He thinks their football can compete with the best, but they have to stay firm at the back.
Annear, pictured right, said: “If we can stop giving away sloppy goals otherwise we will always be on the back foot.
“We have to work as a unit around the field, including our guys up front, to prevent conceding these types of goals.
“By putting in that effort in each week, results will start coming our way more often because I think our style of play will win us games.”
He went onto say Port can take a lot of heart from their defeat on Saturday against a side a league above them, saying he wants to gets those performances on the park every week.
“When we came off the pitch, I went round the dressing room and patted everyone on the back,” Annear said.
“It is something which frustrates me though as we go to a place like Godolphin and play them off the park, yet we’ll go other places were we expect to win and get turned over.
“But I was really proud of the lads on Saturday as we went there with just the bare 11 and the performance and effort shown was superb.
“We have Liskeard Athletic away next and we are going to have to put in another showing like the other day.”
Port’s game at Liskeard kicks-off at 3pm.
