A LAST minute bullet header from Justin Miles saw Wendron United progress to the second round of the Jolly’s Combination League Cup at Helston Atheltic’s expense.
His goal in the 89th minute was the deciding factor against the reserve side from Kellaway Park as Dron completed a 3-2 victory.
It comes just a fortnight after the sides met in league action, with Paul Murray’s men being victorious then too with a 2-1 win away from home.
Dron’s manager said he was pleased to through to the next round of the cup which his side reached the semi final stage of last season.
He added it is nice to look ahead without having to play Helston again after their recent meetings with the reserve team and their first 11 in the Cornwall Charity Cup on November 1.
Murray said: “It was getting a bit nervy at the end of the match and I thought when we scored it was deep into injury time, but then the ref found a little bit more from somewhere.
“It is a relief to finally finish playing against Helston for a while as when you play a side so many times, they get a better chance of beating you and their reserves are a good, physical team.
“As I have been saying all season the league is our main priority, but it is good to keep winning in the cups and keep the momentum going.”
Both sides started the match well with saves having to made early on by the goalkeepers.
Home forward Luke Wort broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when he breached Helston stopper Barry Henessey’s defence.
The visitors grabbed an equaliser before half time though as they bundled in a corner after a goal mouth scramble, with Jason Robertson getting the final touch.
But just before the referee called time on the first 45 minutes, Miles put Dron back ahead with a beautiful free kick from 25 yards out which Henessey could do nothing about.
Athletic came out fighting after the interval but had to wait until the 75th minute to bring things level again as Dan Stidwell showed great strength to hold off challenges before lobbing the keeper.
A winner was pushed for by both sides, but it was the hosts who ended up prevailing.
With a minute left of normal time, a corner was won and taken by Harry Evans, who was featuring for Dron as he was cup-tied from the FA Vase which St Austell were playing in.
His ball swung in to find Miles who did the rest with an unstoppable header and deliver the knock-out punch to Helston.
