SEEING Helston Athletic score five goals for a third consecutive match was a “joy to watch” for their boss Sid Taylor.
The Blues handed a 5-0 thrashing to Liskeard Athletic at home in Saturday’s South West Peninsula League West tie with goals coming from Mark Goldsworthy and Andrew Westgarth, who bagged two each, plus a fine strike by Dan Stidwell.
Following the win and with other results going in their favour, Athletic returned to the top of the table on goal difference.
Taylor said he was ecstatic with his team’s performance and was the form they have picked up in recent matches.
“I thought it was the best we’ve played defensively for a while and we attacked well too,” he said.
“When we played Liskeard on the opening day of the season we were a bit lucky to come away with a 2-1 win and they are one of the best sides we’ve played, so to get a 5-0 win over them is fantastic.
“In the last five league games, we have won four and drawn one and that is putting pressure on our rivals and we just need to keep doing the same things each week to keep it up.”
It took 15 minutes for Goldsworthy, pictured above, to open the scoring for the hosts, which he did by rounding visiting goalkeeper Jamie Blatchford before tapping the ball into the unguarded net.
Westgarth doubled the lead ten minutes before half time after Blatchford was left exposed by his defence with the striker shooting into the left hand side of the goal.
A neat move 11 minutes into the second half saw Stidwell make it 3-0 to the hosts as he made a run down the wing before cutting into the box and firing home.
Blatchford made several good saves to keep the scoreline from getting any heavier, but in the end he would find himself picking the ball out of his net twice more.
Athletic’s fourth came as Westgarth managed to hold off a defender before wiggling round and hitting a shot on target.
Goldsworthy finished proceedings off from the penalty spot.
