PAUL Murray said his Wendron United side believe they can knock rivals Helston Athetic out of the Cornwall Senior Cup on Saturday.
The Jolly’s Combination League team host the South West Peninsula League West leaders in the competition’s third round having already played them once this season in the Cornwall Charity Cup.
This game saw the Blues come out on top, but they needed extra time to win the thrilling match which finished 4-3 after 120 minutes of football at Kellaway Park.
Dron have already knocked another SWPL West team out of the competition this season having beaten Sticker 5-2 in the last round.
Ahead of Athletic’s arrival at Underlane, Murray told the Packet his side have a lot of confidence from their previous meeting.
Murray said: “I do think the belief is there in the side that we can get a win against Helston.
“They have been on a good run of form recently and they’ll be up there challenging for the league title at the end of the season, but our lads have a bit more steel and character about them compared to previous seasons.
“When we play well we have the game to beat anyone in our league or the divisions above us.
“Obviously we are still going to head into Saturday’s match as the underdogs, but that means the pressure is on Helston and we can just enjoy ourselves.”
Athletic’s manager Sid Taylor admitted the favourites tag which is on his side going into the tie will make things tougher for the team.
However, he added the recent performances from the Blues which has seen them win four of their last five leagues games bodes well for them.
Their matchday squad is also expected to welcome back Aaron Collick, Jamie Thirkle and Ash Stidwell, which Taylor said will be an added boost.
“We should hopefully be going into the game with a decent size team,” he said.
“There’s also a few guys like Hugh Howlett, Charlie Young and Kirk Davies (pictured above) who have all played for Wendron in the past so they’ll be wanting to prove a point I’m sure.
“Form does go out of the window in cup games and Wendron are a good side who we know have plenty of strengths which makes them dangerous and we have to respect that.
“What I’m hoping for is an improved defensive performance compared to the Charity Cup game we played against them and if we do that, then we should get into the quarter finals.”
Saturday’s match kicks-off at 2pm.
