BEAUTIFUL blue skies and sunshine although still rather cold, greeted the Sunday Morning Triples Men's teams at Falmouth Bowling Club.
A very close game was forecast between second in the league Falmouth's Waisters skipped by Andy Richards, Tom Reid at No 2 and John Maunder leading, against fourth in the league Helston's Dancers, skipped by Russell Dawes, Terry Chapman at No 2 and Ken Sobey leading.
The Waisters got away to a steady start, leading 4-1 after five ends but after nine ends the Dancers had recovered to 5-7 down. The Waisters then went further ahead with a 1-2-2 to lead 12-5 but a sudden loss of form from the Waisters helped the Dancers again to fight back.
However, a bad mistake on the 15th end saw the Dancers with a measure for shot indicated by the Dancers No 2 invited the skip to play weighted bowls at the head. The result was a disaster as the bowl took a wick off a wing bowl, cleared the jack out to back of the rink where the Waisters had three bowls waiting. This misjudgement cost them the game as the Waisters, now all back on form, stormed away to a great finish 3-2-2-2 t win 21-8.
Andy Richards again was in superb form and with the help from Tom and John at the front end formed a formidable team on this form, keeping the Waisters in second spot.
League leaders Chacewater/ Falmouth Frostbites, skipped by David Winnan, Colin Smith at No 2 and Rob Brown leading, were in serious trouble at the start of their game against Redruth/Falmouth's Nomads, skipped by Rodney Richards, Francis Gilbert at No 2 and Trevor John leading, as they were 9-1 behind after six ends.
But after ten ends the Nomads led 10-5 and then suddenly the Nomads lost their way as their form deserted them whilst the Frostbites began to feel they could still salvage thegame. The Frostbites unbelievably took control to score 2-1-1-2-3-5 in succession to lead 19-10 - what a comeback! They went on to win 19-12 leaving the Nomads wondering what had gone wrong when they were playing so well, giving the Frostbites little chance to reply, but that's bowls, the slightest misfortune or loss of form can spell disaster.
Stithians Ranchers, skipped by Harry Barnes, John Knowles at No 2 and John Grice leading, were a little too strong for Constantine's Odd Bod 2's skipped by Phil Law, who brought with him two of the Constantine's young breed of bowlers currently at the club, Matt Carney leading and Anton Hawley at No 2.
The youngsters equipped themselves well and bowled some extremely good bowls against Stithians' more experienced team, but after ten ends the Ranchers led 14-6. The Odd Bod 2's did manage two counts of four shots but eventually the Ranchers ran out winners 25-14.
Shock of the day was the defeat of Falmouth's Packets with Paul Bobin at skip, David Hay at No 2 and John Bobin at lead by Mawnan/Truro's Rustlers skipped by John Bullen, David Edgecombe at No 2 and Malcolm Dearnley leading. The Packets won the first four ends to lead 4-0, but the Rustlers then took the lead with a 2-1-4-5-1 burst to lead 13-5 after ten ends.
The Rustlers then suffered losses on six ends as the Packets recovered to be only one point behind 12-13 after 15 ends. The Rustlers then won the next two ends and did just enough to hold off any challenge from the Packets as they went on to win 16-14.
Penryn's Hasbeens, skipped by Godfrey Curnow, David Curnow at No 2 and Brian Gerry leading, were pushed all the way by Constantine's Odd Bod 1's skipped by Steve O'Donoghue, Ron Curnow at No 2 and John Drayson at lead. The Odd Bods led 9-4 after ten ends but suddenly dropped 3-3-1 for the Hasbeens to take the lead 10-9. Once in the lead the Hasbeens never relinquished their position and held on to win 19-13 in a well-fought game.
Mawnan's Brass Monkies skipped by Chris Gee, Trevor Wilshaw at No 2 and Richard Rage leading, were just two points behind Carnon's Cavaliers skipped by Mike West, Ron Wright at No 2 and Ray Coston leading. Things were to change immediately as the Brass Monkies picked up eight shots on one end to lead 15-9.
This dramatic end seemed to dishearten the Cavaliers and the Brass Monkies went on to win 23-13.
