PLYMOUTH PARKWAY 3 PENRYN ATHLETIC 2

A GOAL six minutes from time ended the honeymoon period for Penryn Athletic's stand-in manager Matt Salmon as Plymouth Parkway defeated Penryn Athletic 3-2 in the Carlsberg SWL.

It was a cracking game from start to finish, with Parkway taking a sensational first-minute lead. Ryan Fice swept past Dean Harris and with Chris Symons at the near post his cross picked out Mike Southgate who headed into an empty net.

Fice squandered another good opportunity minutes later, but in the 16th minute Athletic were back on level terms when the midfield began to string some passes together. Matt Moore then surged into the box and slipped the ball to Richard Young who hit a superb 16-yard drive past Tony Buckle into the corner of the net.

Fice and Southgate were a constant threat to Athletic's defence and it needed a superb tackle by Lee Bradd to halt Fice when he looked clean through.

Athletic had their chances, with Kayne Trevaskis and Ben Goldring setting up Young, who had his shot blocked by Buckler.

James Miller went close with a long-range dipping shot, but then Symons had to come to Athletic's rescue with a stunning triple save. His first two came from Fice, and then he denied Lee Doel with a header that kept his side in the game.

For a fleeting moment Goldring had a goal in his sights, but his attempt to lob Buckler was a tame effort.

Parkway regained the lead 12 minutes into the second half when Harris took out Southgate in the box for Fice to give Symons no chance with the spot kick.

Parkway had a great chance to increase their lead when Fice got clear in a one-on-one with Symons, but again the 'keeper did well and came out on top.

Athletic were not going to waste their slice of good fortune, and in the 72nd minute grabbed an equaliser when they gained possession and sent Miller away to score with a shot just inside the post.

The goal upset Parkway's rhythm, and for a spell Athletic threatened to take the game away from them, with Miller galloping through but losing control at the crucial moment.

Dale Band had has much time as he could have wanted when he had a golden chance to score, but somehow he rolled the ball wide of a gaping open goal.

It was a miss that Athletic were to rue six minutes from time when Danny Brooks' free kick to the far post found Martyn Sullivan, who brought the ball down and sneaked the ball home from an acute angle to score the late winner.

On Saturday Athletic are away to Saltash United, kick off 2.30 pm.
