PENRYN ATHLETIC 1
ST IVES TOWN 1
THIS was a game that Penryn Athletic needed to win to stay in touch with the Jolly's Combination League leaders, but a draw was a fair result.
Visiting goalkeeper Tony Symons was the busier of the two incumbents, and he was in action early on to tip a good strike from Darren Martin over the bar.
He then denied Dominic Pullen with a good save before St Ives struck with their first real effort, a header from Chris Russell that was pushed for a corner by Symon Winnan. It was Winnan's first game back in goal since sustaining a hand injury.
The visitors took the lead when Giles Lawrence beat Winnan with a good individual effort, but Athletic quickly equalised when Steve Brewer ran on to Pullen's pass to give Symons no chance.
Mike Brewer got in on the act with two well-struck shots that Symons somehow managed to keep out, and then defender Tristan Lambert kept his side in the game when he headed Steve Brewer's shot off the line.
Ironically, it was Lambert who almost snatched the lead for Town when his shot struck a post and Chris Lock had a chance to snatch all three points when his effort was cleared off the line by Sean Halford.
Nathan Grimshaw was the pick of an Athletic defence that overall defended well.
Athletic: S Winnan, M Brewer, K Davis, N Grimshaw, P Kneebone, D Martin, W Scoley, S Halford, S Warr, D Pullen, S Brewer. Subs: J Johnson, S Owen.
