FOR the first time since December 27, Penryn Athletic played a game of football.
Friday night’s quarter final tie in the Cornwall Charity Cup saw the side take to the field after spending six weeks on the sidelines due to waterlogged pitches.
Despite a few signs of rustiness, Athletic booked their place in the semi finals alongside Helston Athletic, St Dennis and Sticker with a 3-1 win after extra time against Mousehole.
The visitors went into the match fresh from an emphatic 6-1 victory at South West Peninsula League West high flyers Sticker, but they took a while to adjust to conditions under the floodlights at Kernick Road.
Athletic dominated the first half with Kevin Lawrence nearly opening the scoring as he forced a fine save from Dan Burrows at close range.
The away side’s goalkeeper was in the right place again shortly afterwards as he pushed away a fiery shot from Luke Brabyn.
Pressure finally told in the 35th minute when Scott Palmer slotted home a strike from the narrowest of angles after the ball deflected off a defender.
It seemed like a corner was coming for Athletic, but Palmer managed to reach the ball just in time.
Proceedings continues as they had in the first half after the break and Lawrence went close again when he was found by Brabyn in the box.
However, he delayed a shot and by the time he had fired the ball towards goal, two defenders had tracked back to block the effort.
Mousehole started having a greater say in the game, but were unable to find the target as their chances went wide or over the bar.
Injuries to Russell May and Ben Oliver led to six minutes of added on time, during which the visitors did grab an equaliser.
Wade Brown popped up at a corner to nod past Chris Symons to set up a period of extra time.
Early dominance during the additional 30 minutes fell to Mousehole, but a sucker punch was thrown in by Athletic as they retook the lead.
Ollie Moody’s corner five minutes into the first period found Ryan Martt, who slammed the ball into the net.
The victory was secured two minutes later when substitute David Leach broke down the left wing before sending a shot towards goal.
Burrows could only parry the powerful effort and Tyler Cooke leapt in to poke home and send Athletic into the semi final stage.
On Saturday, Bude Town travel to Kernick Road in the league, with the hosts looking to revenge their 5-0 in November.
