WENDRON United manager Paul Murray has urged his side to go and become history makers on Saturday.
The Jolly’s Combination League side welcome South West Peninsula League Premier side Callington Town to Underlane in the Cornwall Senior Cup quarter finals.
Should Dron pull off another upset, having already beaten teams in higher leagues to reach this stage, it will mark the first time the team has ever reached the competitions semi finals.
With this in mind, Murray told the Packet plenty of excitement is building round the club.
Murray said: “There is a real buzz about the place as it is the chance to create history.
“For the neutrals, it will probably be the stand-out tie to come and watch and we are expecting a big crowd at the ground.
“It will be a big ask as Callington are two divisions above us and play quite a direct style of football from what I’ve heard.
“But the players love success and winning games and the extra motivation they need is knowing the fact a win on Saturday will be really special for the club.”
It is the second year in a row Dron have reached the quarter finals, having been beaten by eventual runners-up Bodmin Town 3-0 at the same stage last season.
Reflecting on the difference from last time round, Murray feels his side has a better chance of progressing.
“I’m sure if you ask Darren Gilbert and the Bodmin guys, they’ll tell you we really gave them a game last year,” he said.
“We were really in the game until Jason Roberts had to go off and then we lost it in the last 20 minutes.
“This time though, we are up against a side who, with no disrespect meant, are not quite in the same calibre as Bodmin and if we can keep the performance up for a full 90 minutes, then we stand a great chance of winning.”
Justin Miles slots home the penalty which won Wendron their third round tie against Helston Athletic.
He went onto say Dron must not repeat what they did on Saturday, when they went 2-0 down against fellow Combination League title chasers St Agnes.
Goals from Roberts, Steve Brewer and Luke Wort helped the home side stage a brilliant fight back and earn them three points.
Murray said: “I have a feeling a few eyes and heads were already looking ahead to this weekend, which led to mistakes happening and us going 2-0 down.
“We simply cannot afford to give Callington a two goal head start as it will be harder to come back from.
“Sometimes in the league, you can afford to concede a goal or play badly early on and still get a win, but when you come up against a Peninsula Premier side, they will kill you off.
“Compared to last season, we are mentally stronger and that showed against St Agnes and that is something we have to take into the quarter final.”
Ahead of the clash, Dron have confirmed the signing of left back Richard Kellow.
The 25-year-old has joined the Underlane outfit from South West Peninsula League West side Penzance.
As reported by the Packet last month, Kellow had been close to re-signing for Falmouth Town, having left Bickland Park in the summer, but an agreement was not reached.
