THE Falmouth Men's Triples League continued on Sunday morning with a touch of sadness as organiser, Tom Reid, announced the deaths of two very well known bowlers, Sam Meneer from Carnmoggas Indoor Club and St Stephen, also Ken Datson from the Penryn Bowling Club and formerly of Carnon Downs Bowling Club.

Sam was well liked by the Falmouth members and he always had a joke and a laugh whenever he captained his team. Ken played for the Penryn club last winter in the Men's Triples League and was a very likeable man. Both will be greatly missed and all the members of the league stood for a minute's silence to show their respect.

The bowls results saw the first four in the league win - so there's no change at the top.

League leaders Chacewater/Fal Frostbites, skipped by David Winnan, Ernie Eva at number two and Rob Brown leading, proved too strong for Constantine's Odd Bod 2s, skipped by Bob Mynett, Anton Hawley at number two and M Carney leading. Although the two Constantine youngsters again bowled well, the experience of the Frostbites number two and skip saw them through to a comfortable win 26-10.

Falmouth's Waisters, skipped by Andy Richards, Ron Medlyn at number two and John Maunder at lead, found Carnon's Cavaliers, skipped by Doug Thomas, George Cramp at number two and Ron Coston leading, a tough nut to crack.

Although the Waisters team were bowling well, they were unable to keep their shots as Carnon's skip, Doug Thomas was playing a "blinder" and end after end he came in to rest out the Falmouth bowls to hold shot on second bowl.

After 12 ends the scores were all level and the Waisters kept telling themselves to keep potting bowls into the head as Doug could not possibly keep this run of success going. He must miss on one end at least and the Waisters could have a lot of shots.

On the 13th end, the Waisters, holding one shot with a four third bowls in a good position, Doug played into the head, but was a little heavy and removed his own second bowl. He again went through the head with his last bowl and Andy Richards just had to draw his last bowl into the head to total a count of seven shots on the end.

This was followed by a three and it was virtually the end of the game, although on the last end, with the Waisters holding four shots, Doug played weight and sent the jack into the ditch for two shots.

So the Waisters eventually had their just desserts as they did bowl well, but will remember Doug Thomas wrecking their heads for a long time.

Penryn's Hasbeens, skipped by Godfrey Curnow, Marshall Curnow at number two and David Curnow leading, the Dream Team got away to a good start against Falmouth's Packets, skipped by Tony Pereir, Walter Clark at number two and Ray McCormack leading. After ten ends the Hasbeens led 11-6 and went on to take five of the six last ends to record a good win 17-10 over the Packets.

Helston's Dancers, skipped by Terry Channon, David Summers at number two and Ken Sobey leading, had a good start to lead 8-2 after 7-ends over Mawnan's Brass Monkies, skipped by R Ragg, Trevor Wilshaw at number two and Don Hall leading. The Brass Monkies made a mini recovery, but very quickly dropped two fours to trail 18-9 after 14-ends.

The remaining ends were evenly shared, so the Dancers won 21-12.

Redruth/Fal Nomads, skipped by Rodney Richards, Cyril Bayless at number two and Francis Gilbert leading, trailed Stithians Ranchers, skipped by Phil Matthews, John Knowles at number two and John Grice leading, by 5-1 after four ends. Things were rather close right up to the 15th-end, with the Ranchers just in front 13-10. However, the Ranchers then picked up five shots on the 16th end to lead 18-10, although the Nomads finished with and one and a five, they just could not catch the Ranchers, who held on to win 18-16.

Constantine's Odd Bod 1s, Ron Curnow at skip, Richard Finch at number two and Harry Garbutt leading, were against Mawnan/Truro's Rustlers with Bill Bingham leading, Malcolm Dearnley at number two and unfortunately their skip, David Beattie, failed to appear. The Odd Bod 1s were given the points, although a friendly was played and the Odd Bod 1s won that, but it was very disappointing for all concerned.

Results - Brass Monkies (Mawnan) v Dancers (Helston): R Ragg 12, T Channon 21; Waisters (Falmouth) v Carnon Cavaliers: A Richards 20, D Thomas 12; Nomads (Redruth/Fal) v Ranchers (Stithians): R Richards 16, P Matthews 18; Hasbeens (Penryn) v Packets (Falmouth): G Curnow 17, A Pereir 10; Frostbites (Chacewater/Fal) v Odd Bod 2s (Constantine): D Winnan 26, R Mynett 10; Rustlers (Mawnan/Truro) v Odd Bod 1s (Constantine): Odd Bod 1s awarded points as Rustlers had only two players.
