A MILD Tuesday morning, with a forecast of showers to come later in the day, saw the next round of the Falmouth Ladies Triples League played with some very interesting results.
League leaders, Penryn's Forget-me-Nots, skipped by Pat Jose, Margaret Fernie at number two and Penny Drennan leading, were to face a strong team from Mylor, the Cornflowers, who are now blooming after they made such a poor start to the season. Skipped by Christine Robinson, Lucie Sulch at number two and Sylvia Morris leading extremely well, the Cornflowers were soon in the lead as after 10-ends they led 11-7 and a turn up for the books looked ominous.
Then the first shower of rain came down and across the green scores changed - quite dramatically in some cases!
Leading 13-7, the Cornflowers found the rain not to their liking as the Forget-me-Nots won the last three ends of the 15 played, but could not quite catch the Cornflowers, who won 13-11 to put the Forget-me-Nots' top spot in jeopardy.
The team who could benefit most from the leader's loss was the Chacewater team, the Carnations, skipped by Anne Park, Bernie Warren at number two and Dot Dunstan leading, who were playing another Mylor team, the Bluebells, skipped by Ann Sewell, Dorothy Poole at number two and Betty Stuart leading.
The Carnations had a great start with a one and a five to lead 10-6 after 10-ends. The rain again altered things dramatically as Mylor won the next three ends 2-2-3 to go into the final end 13-11 up, leaders for the first time in the game.
In the final end the Carnations were holding two shots and Anne Park had her last bowl to play the winning bowl, but it fell an inch short of the count, so the game was a tie 13-13.
So now the Carnations are level on points with the Forget-me-Nots, but the shot difference puts the Forget-me-Nots a long way ahead. Anne may regret not reaching the head to win this game, as they would now have been top if she had succeeded.
Mawnan's Daffodils, skipped by Rose Wilshaw, Linda Storey at number two and Pam Dearnley leading, pulled themselves through to third place in the league with a good win against Falmouth's Hyacinths skipped by Vi McDonald, Judy Bobin at number two and Christine Chatterton leading.
The Daffodils were soon in the lead and by the 10th end were well in control 16-4 up. The Hyacinths, who have had a torrid time lately with big defeats in the last four games, now made a mini recovery in the rain to bring their total to 11, but the Daffodils had done enough in the dry weather to win 17-11.
Falmouth's Tulips, skipped by Suzanne Morris, Jackie Medlyn at number two and Carol Stanforth leading, were expecting a tough game against the improving Carnon's Daisies, skipped by Marnie Blunden, Jean Wright at number two and Barbara O'Mahoney leading.
The teams were level at 5-5 after six ends, but the Daisies went ahead with a three. The game then changed as the Tulips picked up a six followed by a five to now lead 17-8 after 10-ends.
The arrival of the rain saw the Daises take all the last five ends 1-1-3-1-1 as the Tulips seemed to be washed away and wilted. However, the two previous high scoring ends were enough for them to hang on to win 17-15 and breathe a sigh of relief at the end.
Constantine's Snapdragons, skipped by Jenny Hosking, Lyn Law at number two and Yolande Drayson leading, were in rampant mood and after six ends had established a 15-1 lead against Stithians Speedwells, skipped by Margaret Stribley, Maureen Pascoe at number two and Mary Pascoe leading.
The Speedwells made a mini recovery to trail 16-8 after ten ends. Once again the rain intervened as the Snapdragons with a 1-1-5-5 revelled in the conditions and went on to a big win 28-10, leaving the Speedwells still without a win in the competition.
