PENRYN u11s 14pts
OLD NORTHAMPTONIANS u11s 0pts
PENRYN entertained touring side Old Northamptonians last Saturday and research had shown the coaches that this team were no mugs having recently won the Twickenham under 11's festival final.
They had also lost very few matches all season.
Penryn were defending their season's unbeaten run, but one look at the visiting team showed that they were at least a stone a man heavier than the Penryn forwards.
Penryn played with passion and determination against probably the best organised and well-drill side that they have come across all season.
Early exchanges were even, however, with the ON's forwards rucking extremely well enabling them to recycle the ball.
The Penryn three-quarters put their bodies on the line and were able to stop the ON's attacks time and time again. Although it looked as though the ON's had most of the possession the majority of the rugby was played within the ON's half.
Half time saw the score at nil nil and a comment was heard from the visitors spectators that "they had always scored by half time".
The second half saw Penryn apply the pressure and from a quick tap penalty Jack Gleadow sped in towards the corner and with almost no room to work in had a superb touch down. Rory Christopher landed the extra points.
The ON's hit back had but were unable to break down the Borough defence and after a well weighted kick through Kyle Laycock pounced on a lose ball which had been adduced by the referee to have been knocked on by the ON's over their own line. Again dependable Christopher kicked the extra points.
This was a truly magnificent win which sets the team up well for next week's game against old rivals Penzance, who had been offered this fixture with the ON's but had turned it down.
