PENRYN ATHLETIC 2
ILLOGAN 1
THREE points were crucial for Penryn Athletic if they were to stay on the fringe of the Jolly's Combination League title race and they didn't disappoint their supporters with a hard-earned win over the league leaders.
Illogan still have a cushion, but with Mousehole breathing down their necks they may start to feel the pressure.
Illogan created a good opportunity as early as the third minute when Andy Hill got on the end of Danny Scorer's cross but hit his shot straight at the 'keeper.
Seven minutes later Shane Richards was put through in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but he put his shot wide of the post and a later effort saw Richards beat the 'keeper only for Paul Kneebone to head the ball off the line.
Athletic took the lead in the 20th minute when Dominic Pullen ran on to a pass over the top from Steve Warr and beat Danny Burrows to the ball to lob it over him and then knock it into the net.
Will Scoley shot over from close range, but Athletic added a second goal eight minutes later when Pullen scored from the penalty spot after Burrows had brought down Mike Brewer.
Illogan got back into the game a minute into stoppage time when Nicky Medlin was brought down in the box for Simon Ellis to score from the spotkick.
The visitors continued to create chances in the second half with Richards unlucky when his effort went over the bar from Hill's cross and substitute Rodney Gregory seeing his shot pushed around the post by Winnan.
With Paul Kneebone prominent in defence for Athletic, they bounced back with Kirk Davis and Scoley having good openings well saved by Burrows whilst in the closing stages Winnan made two fine saves from Gareth Pitt and Hill.
Athletic: S Winnan, M Brewer, K Davis, N Grimshaw, P Kneebone, W Scoley, S Halford, S Warr, D Pullen, S Brewer, L Jeffrey. Subs: D Martin and D Thompson.
