PENRYN Athletic rediscovered their goalscoring touch in the Carlsberg SWL to hand Millbrook a 7-1 thumping on their own ground.
After their disappointing performance of the previous week, Athletic took advantage of Millbrook's inability to come to terms with their pace and time and again scythed open the home defence. In fact, Millbrook could count themselves fortunate that the score wasn't well into double figures.
Athletic dominated the opening exchanges and took the lead in the 11th minute when Dale Band found Matt Drummond wide on the left. Drummond took the ball on as he cut in towards the box and picked out James Miller who nipped in to tuck the ball past Dan Berry from six yards.
That was Miller's only real contribution because shortly afterwards he had to be substituted after aggravating an injury.
A second goal was always on the cards and it duly arrived in the 26th minute when over-fussy referee Gary Davis gave Athletic a belated free kick. Dean Harris flighted the free kick into the box and Steve Rowson, following the line of the ball, got on the end of it to head it down and past a static Berry.
Millbrook rarely posed an attacking threat and just before half time the game slipped further away from them when Athletic scored a third goal. Dan Richardson laid the ball into the path of Ben Goldring who turned inside his man and set up Dale Band to hit his shot past Berry inside the near post.
Having enjoyed such a good opening half Athletic maintained the steady scoring in the second period with a fourth goal coming in the 55th minute. Rowson's corner was headed out as far as Harris who, from 22 yards, gave Berry no chance with a thunderous shot.
Mike Cain, on as a substitute in one of his fleeting appearances, was booked almost immediately after entering the fray.
The fifth goal didn't come until the 71st minute when Drummond found himself in space on the flank. A cross eventually delivered into the box found Richard Young who hit a high, rasping shot into the roof of the net.
A minute later Millbrook had to pick the ball out of the net again when Drummond was clear and rapped his shot against the post only for the supporting Adam Trudgian to follow up and beat Berry to score.
Millbrook grabbed a consolation goal four minutes from time when Harris got caught out, allowing Joe Truelove to fasten on to a through ball and turn inside the last defender and roll the ball across the face of the goal for Robbie Stephens to score.
There was still time to heap more misery on the home side and two minutes later Drummond was tripped in the box for Rowson to despatch the spotkick past Berry to complete a satisfying win.
On Saturday Athletic entertain St Blazey, kick off 230 pm.
