DARK clouded skies with heavy showers and strong winds were forecast for the Men's Triples League at Falmouth Bowling Club on Sunday morning and with most players dressed in their heavy weather garments, the players took to the green anticipating the worst.
However, apart from one light shower, the rain kept off, although the bowling was difficult in a strong north westerly cross wind.
The stars this week were the Constantine Odd Bod 2s skipped by Phil Law with Anton Hawley No 2 and Matthew Carney leading, as they took an early lead against the Truro/Mawnan Rustlers skipped by John Bullen, Phil Dunstan No 2, with Malcolm Dearnley leading.
The Odd Bod 2's were 17-1 up after ten ends with some brilliant bowling by the two youngsters at the front end and with the experience and guidance of their skip Phil Law calling the shots. The Rustlers tried to make a recovery with two twos and finished the stronger, but the Odd Bods 2s had done all the early damage and ran out well-deserved winners 21-9.
It is so good to see these Constantine young men in action and playing so well. It has been rumoured the youngsters are entering their own team next year so everyone will have to be on their guard as they are improving with every game and could pose a serious threat to all the teams in the league.
Top of the table Chacewater/Fal Frostbites skipped by David Winnan, Chris Instance No 2 and Colin Smith leading, proved far too strong for Mawnan's Brass Monkies skipped by Chris Gee, Tony Stevenson No 2 and Don Hall leading. The Frostbites soon got into their rhythm and by the tenth end had established a 16-3 lead. The 12th end saw them put in a series 1-2-4-3-1 finishing with another three to run out impressive winners 30-6.
Falmouth's Waisters skipped by Andy Richards, Ron Medlyn No 2 and Tom Reid leading, expected a tough game against local rivals, but friends, Penryn's Hasbeens skipped by Godfrey Curnow, Michael Churcher No 2 and Brian Gerry at lead, and they were not disappointed.
The game was very evenly poised, as after nine ends the Waisters led 7-6 with all the players finding the strong cross wind difficult. The Waisters mainly concentrated playing against the wind and generally they were just a little more consistent than the Hasbeens who tended to attack the lead frequently, as a "modicum" of weight was being asked of Godfrey at skip by Mike at No 2, some confusion of the request ensued.
The Waisters ,in the remaining five ends, picked up ten shots, whilst the Hasbeens could only muster two, so the Waisters just about deserved their win, although at times it was tougher than the final score suggests, Waisters 20, Hasbeens 9.
Redruth/Fal Nomads skipped by John Jones, Melville Angel No 2 and John Daly leading, got away to a good start against Carnon's Cavaliers skipped by Doug Thomas, Mike West No 2 and Ron Wright leading, as they led 12-4 after ten ends. The Nomads kept the pressure on with more consistent bowling than the Cavaliers and they ended with 3-1-3 to win the game 20-10. This was a good result for the Nomads as the Cavaliers have been a hard nut to crack recently.
Helston's Dancers skipped by Russell Dawes, Clifford Thomas at No 2 and Ken Sobey leading, kept up their consistent good form of late and by the tenth end led 12-3 against Constantine's Odd Bod 1s skipped by Steve O'Donoghue, Ron Curnow No 2 and Richard Finch leading. The Odd Bod 1s could only muster four singles in the game as the Dancers ran away with the game to win 25-4.
Next week the inform Dancers meet the table toppers Frostbites in a crucial game as a result for the Dancers could make a big difference at the top of the league, so everyone is looking forward with interest to this clash of two excellent teams, both on good form.
Falmouth Packets skipped by Tony Pereir, Walter Clark No 2 with Joan Bobin at lead, had a decent start and after ten ends led 8-6 against Stithians Ranchers team skipped by Harry Barnes, Edwin Watson No 2 and David Rickard leading.
The Ranchers then put their act together with a 1-1-2-2-2-1 to go into the lead 14-9, although the Packets picket up four shots on the last end, it was not enough to prevent the Ranchers winning 15-13.
