FALMOUTH Town gained their third victory over Callington Town this season and remained in seventh place in the Carlsberg SWL with this hard earned win at Bickland Park on Saturday.
Steve Proctor had a great chance after just five minutes when he ran on to a good through ball and rounded a defender but visiting 'keeper Dan Johnson was alert to the threat and managed to block the shot.
A few minutes later Mike Roberts was brought down just outside the area and Darren Burchell's resultant free kick was just finger-tipped around the post for a corner.
Callington forced a free kick after 15 minutes but Joe Tickle gathered the high ball under pressure in his six yard box.
Chris Sully came to Callington's rescue a few minutes later when Burchell's partially deflected shot from 25 yards flew over the 'keeper, but as it headed towards the goal line, the defender just got his foot to it and turned it round the post, despite the close attention of the onrushing Roberts.
Midway through the half, Callington launched another long ball through the middle which, this time, caught out Town's defence and Danny Zalek raced after it, but Tickle was quickly off his line to kick the ball away and out of danger.
The game was never allowed to flow due to a series of petty fouls, dubious offside decisions and a pitch which cut up as the game wore on following the week's rain.
Mike Roberts was having a busy game for Town in midfield. One minute breaking up a visiting attack and the next, racing through the Callington defence to try and set up Carl Paparone and Proctor up front.
The decisive goal came after 41 minutes. Town had a free kick out on the right wing following a foul on Roberts which Burchell knocked high into the penalty area and Chris Davey rose above the defence to power the ball into the back of the net with a bullet header.
Both teams forced corners early in the second half, but defences held firm to avert any danger.
Paparone, who did a lot of running for no reward, found enough space to get a shot in but Johnson was equal to it and gathered it safely.
Carlton Farnham came on for Proctor after an hour and caused some new problems for the hard working Callington defenders.
The visitors had a good breakaway attack which left Town's defence trailing, but Dan Discombe hurried his shot and it flew across the face of the goal and out for a goal kick.
Following a good pass from Burchell, Paparone put over an excellent cross from the right but Farnham's poor header flew over the bar.
A minute later, Dave McGhee fed the ball to Paparone who was unable to shake off Sully and was forced wide, where he found the overlapping Fergus Nevin, but his cross was headed away.
Callington enjoyed a spell of pressure which was soaked up well by a Town defence which was marshalled well by Peter Davey, who, in the absence of the suspended Wayne Brown, was captain for the day.
Lee Beer cleared another attack out to Roberts and he in turn fed a lovely ball inside to Burchell who tried a speculative shot from 20 yards which flew over the bar.
Tickle was forced into a good save when he tipped a free kick over the bar for what proved to be the first of two consecutive corners which the visitors failed to take advantage of.
Ten minutes from time, Carlton Farnham's brother, Bradley, came on to replace Burchell for his debut. This meant that Town had two sets of brothers in their line up for the first time since the 1989/90 season when the brothers Dent (John and Andy) and Wignall (Gary and Guy) played together away to Porthleven in a South Western League match on August 26, 1989. They also became the third set of brother's to play together for Falmouth this season with the Weston's and the Davey's.
Falmouth aim to make it six consecutive wins with an away game on Wadebridge's new flat pitch at Bodieve Park next Saturday. 2.30 kick off (to be confirmed)
