WITH summer sunshine and a firm pitch, this traditional Easter Saturday fixture was always going to be a fast, frenzied mixture of very honest, competitive endeavour and forced errors as both sides, combining youthful enthusiasm with gnarled experience, attempted to play the Barbarian way without the required consistent cohesion.

Nevertheless this was an enjoyable match for all supporters to witness as the ball was moved from wing to wing and the play ebbed and flowed up and down the field.

Falmouth were in the lead within two minutes as they tore into the ODs' half from the kick-off and Kevin Hughes, playing his last game before retiring, was credited with the try after a strong forward drive took him over the line.

A good start once again, but the ODs immediately came back strongly and set up stall in the Falmouth half for a good 15 minutes as their forwards and backs combined well in a series of flowing attacks. Falmouth were under pressure but defended well before a clever clearance kick caught the visitors out of position and Darren Pellow chased hard to gather and run in from 30 metres to touch down under the posts.

Jack Brown confidently drop-goaled the conversion and then supported well to score an excellent try way out on the right after a breakout from defence and crisp interpassing allowed Peter Wellington to deliver the scoring pass. Jack Brown converted from distance and Falmouth were in command at 19-0.

At this point the ODs rallied and caught the home side napping with a neat back row move from an attacking scrum which transferred the ball to winger John Coling and he forced his way over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Confidence continued to grow in the Old Boys' team and they returned to the attack with good possession and strong running. Replacement, Adrian Hosking, making his 33rd Easter tour, was almost over in the left hand corner and Gareth Leaver was almost in at the opposite end for Falmouth but both defences held on and the half-time whistle arrived with the score at 19-5.

Both teams made changes in personnel during the interval but they took little time to settle as the game proceeded at a hot pace. Michael Keverne, guesting at number 10 for the ODs, set up a good position with a neat chip over the top which caught the advancing defence offguard and flanker, George Ross, who had travelled from Sydney, Australia, to make the tour, crashed over for a well-deserved try.

At 19-10 the game was finely poised and both sides worked hard to find the openings which would make the difference before Falmouth completed another fluent threequarter move to the right which, once again, allowed Peter Wellington to send Jack Brown to the line and convert.

At 26-10 and time running out, Falmouth relaxed and permitted the ODs to come at them for a final fling. The defence stood strong until Falmouth tried to counterattack and a thunderous tackle by George Ross on the sorry recipient of a hospital pass allowed a crucial turnover. Support was quickly on hand from the visiting outsides and Jean-Pierre Mills on the right wing was given the room to speed into the corner for the final try of an enjoyable game.

Next Saturday Falmouth entertain Tavistock for the final league game of the season and could jump a place in the league if they win and Wellington fail at Cullompton.

The "A" team visit Bodmin for a friendly fixture. There will be a end-of-season reception for vice presidents and sponsors before the Tavistock game with the clubhouse opening at 12:30pm.
