FALMOUTH TOWN 2
PENRYN ATHLETIC 2
FALMOUTH Town remain unbeaten under Andy Bowker's reign as manager, but they have now drawn their last three Carlsberg SWL games - this one coming courtesy of a last gasp equaliser.
Town had Wayne Brown back in the starting line up, against his former club, in place of Lee Beer who was named as a sub and was not fully fit. In their line up, Penryn included no fewer than five former Town players in their line-up.
A slow start saw neither side test their opposite goalkeepers with both Joe Tickle and Chris Symons only having crosses and poor passes to deal with.
After 12 minutes, Wayne Hewitt was bundled over by Matt Salmon but the referee waved played on and Salmon found Matt Drummond breaking away on the right. His cross into the area saw James Miller's shot well saved by Tickle before Miller hit the rebound wide.
The opening goal came in the 23rd minute and it gave the visitors the lead. From a Town attack, Hewitt's pass was intercepted by Adam Trudgian who played it to Rowson on the half way line. A brief look up and a neat pass sent Drummond away down the right flank before he cut into the area. He drew Tickle before rolling it to Matt Salmon who slid the ball home under pressure from a Town defender.
Within two minutes, Town could have been level. Carl Paparone broke through and beat the offside trap and with Symons out of his area, as he attempted to shoot, he was tackled by Dean Harris and Symons easily saved the shot.
A moment of genius on the half hour saw Town denied. Following Matt Moore's clearance, Fergus Nevin hit a smashing half volley from 30 yards and Symons made an instinctive save, tipping the ball on to the bar and over for a corner.
A tackle on Miller by Darren Burchell in the 45th minute left the Athletic player needing treatment and a booking for the Town midfielder. Miller was replaced at half time by Ben Goldring.
"Rusty" Rowson picked up a booking for a foul in the 50th minute and a minute later came the equalising goal.
Andy Bowker's pass found Dave McGhee and he in turn found Carl Paparone who slotted the ball home from the edge of the six yard box and under the body of Chris Symons for his first Town goal.
The visitors, however, regained the lead two minutes later. A Dean Harris free kick found Rowson at the far post and unmarked and in space he headed Athletic in front against his former club.
In the 65th minute, Wayne Hewitt picked up a yellow card for a foul on Symons and four minutes later Paparone was played in but the impressive Symons made a decent save and Paparone's headed reply went wide.
After being awarded a free kick on the edge of the box following a foul, Burchell scored but St Austell referee Robin Tucker ordered a retake as he had not blown his whistle. Burchell's second attempt hit the wall and went over for a corner.
Athletic should have wrapped up the game in the 78th minute. Rowson was through on goal and in a one-on-one situation with Tickle, the Town custodian made a brilliant save to tip the ball over the bar.
Beer came on for Steve Sims, on his home debut, and the visitors had Trudgian booked for a foul in the 85th minute.
Four minutes later Dale Band missed a glorious chance when he sliced his effort wide and it proved a costly miss because Town grabbed the equaliser in the 91st minute. Following a spell of heavy pressure, Brown's cross found Chris Wolstencroft whose first effort hit Paparone before scoring with a scissor kick from six yards.
Town entertain Bodmin Town on Saturday, kick off 2.45 pm and Athletic visit Plymouth Argyle.
