PAUL Andrew has said becoming a joint vice-captain at the Cornish Pirates was an "unexpected honour".
Last week, the Greene King IPA Championship club announced the prop will be part of the captaincy team for 2015/16 alongside skipper Chris Morgan and his assistant from last season Matt Evans, who both retain their roles.
The Truro-born player returned to the Pirates a year ago after spending a season with Aviva Premiership side Worcester Warriors, having previously been at the Mennaye between 2008 and 2013.
Speaking to the Packet, Andrew said he was a bit surprised when director of rugby Ian Davies asked him to take up the role, but it was an offer he was too proud to refuse.
Andrew said: "When Ian approached me about becoming a joint vice-captain, it came quite out of the blue really.
"I think it will be more of a supporting role that I find myself in as both Chris and Matt have done fantastically since taking over the captaincy reins last season and they have quite a bit of gas in tank left.
"We have a good mix of youth and experience in the team and although I would hate to tell a player about something they already know, but if there is something I know and think will help them then I'll pass it on.
"One thing I will be looking to do is to boost the confidence of the younger guys, as they have a lot of talent and potential to go on to do great things if they believe in themselves."
During his first season back at the Mennaye, Andrew's season was ravaged by injury which saw the 26-year-old play no more than four consecutive games.
"It was a bit frustrating," he admitted.
"But touch wood, with all the work the physio's have been doing on me I'll be able to play a bigger part next season."
