THREE and a half hours of football couldn't separate these two sides in the Westinsure Cornwall Junior Cup Final and eventually it came down to a penalty shootout that saw Mawnan emerge victorious in emphatic style.

Both goalkeeper and penalty takers did their jobs superbly well as Mawnan became the first side to lift the new trophy.

Without the influential Andy Munro at the heart of their defence, Mawnan had to reorganise their line-up, but they were soon into their stride and had a great chance to take the lead in the third minute.

Damien Stevens pounced on a underhit back pass, but was taken down by Andy May on the edge of the boxe. The last defender, May was fortunate to escape with just a yellow card with Stevens in a goalscoring position.

Two minutes later Dave Grose was booked for scything down Ross Stevens as he threatened when cutting in along the by-line.

Uncompromising in defence, St Dennis countered with a good move by Chris Rickard on the flank, but as on many occasions the Saints never committed enough players forward and no-one was there to take advantage of the opening.

St Dennis's Steve Hayhurst crossed for Ryan Hayhurst to get in a header, but it was always going just too wide of the far upright.

Mawnan suffered a blow when Duncan Whatmore had to be substituted in the 15th minute following a rib injury.

Both defences were well on top, but Adam Pryor had a great chance to score in the 32nd minute when he cut in, but he his hooked his shot across the goal.

Right on half-time Gregg Renfree fed off a ball from Paul Murray and after working his way across the box lashed his shot high and wide of the target.

The second half saw little change in pattern, but Saints' Ryan Hayhurst became the first of the second half bookings.

It was difficult to see where a goal would come from, but in the 81st minute Mawnan edged in front following a fine run and cross from Pryor. Renfree, who worked tirelessly throughout, got in front of a defender and the goalkeeper and stabbed the ball into the corner of the net.

St Dennis had a half chance that Steve Hayhurst hit well wide, but five minutes from time Mark Russell had to be substituted after sustaining an injury and the incident gave the Saints the chance they were looking for to stay in the tie.

Mawnan lost their shape, had no outlet and invited intense pressure. In the final minute of normal time Darren Davies whipped in a corner and Mike Hammond headed in unmarked at the near post.

The game became stretched in extra time and Mawnan had a good shout for a penalty after Renfree was brought down as he turned, but nothing was given and despite creating one or other opportunities it all came down to five spotkicks.

Stuart Wilkes, Damian Stevens, Andy Julian and Chris Pellow all scored with nerveless penalties, but St Dennis were not so fortunate. Goalkeeper Barrett scored at the second attempt after Noott was ruled to have come off his line in saving his first effort, and then after saving Davies' spot kick Rickard kept his side in the tie when he scored. But up stepped Steve Hayhurst who thumped his shot against the post which left a jubilant Mawnan side winners with a penalty to spare.

After the match a delighted Gregg Renfree was pleased with the result: "It was a shame that it had to be decided on penalties and I felt sorry for St Dennis, but our lads did superbly well under real pressure.

"It's been a long road with several tough games, but the lads now have their reward. On behalf of the team, I would like to thank all those people who came to support us. They were fantastic and the players really appreciated it."
