PENRYN COLTS 9pts

REDRUTH COLTS 16pts

Penryn were extremely unlucky to end this final as runners up, after having so much territorial advantage for the majority of the game.

After a frantic opening exchange of Penalties, Redruth found themselves with their noses in front at 6-3 due to a favourable wind. However, for all of Penryn's solid lineout play their nemesis seemed to be the scrum where the heavier Redruth pack were disruptive and also at the breakdown where they were far quicker, leading to many turnovers of the Borough ball.

Towards the end of the first half came the pivotal moment of the game which would eventually turn out to be the difference between the two teams. A huge kick from the consistent boot of Brett Rule, playing at outside half for Redruth, was launched from his 22 downfield. It took a deflection from a Penryn player to go touch in goal which resulted in a Redruth 5 metre scrum.

This was the first and only time Redruth had found themselves in the Penryn 22 that half and resulted in a pick up and drive over the line which once converted gave the Reds a commanding if not unfair 13-3 lead. One further penalty enabled Redruth to stretch out to 16-3.

The second half saw a resurgent if not frustrated Penryn team camped in the Redruth half, applying unrelenting pressure. This resulted in two successful penalties eventually kicked by fly half Taron Peacock.

With the score now 16-9, Penryn were looking for that all important breakthrough to equal the scores. Time and time again the Redruth defence was rock solid, thwarting everything Penryn could throw at them and the eventual scoreline definitely flattered Redruth as the game was a much more closely-fought affair.

Although unsuccessful the lads should not forget that the last three seasons have seen Penryn Colts reaffirm themselves as one of the top teams in Cornwall and the senior Colts should go on to bolster the Penryn Ist XV for seasons to come.

Thanks have been extended to all the parent's, coaches, committee and players who have helped ressurect the Penryn Colts set up.
