ST IVES TOWN 1
PENRYN ATHLETIC 1
PENRYN Athletic were held to a draw in their Jolly's Combination League game with St Ives Town at The Saltings, but even if they had won it would not have been enough to deny Illogan the championship.
On a bumpy surface Town almost grabbed an early lead when Adam Goulding hit a 25-yard shot that skimmed the bar, but both sides were limited to very few chances against defences that generally held the whip hand.
Goals always looked as if they were going to be at a premium and it wasn't until 15 minutes from time that Town snatched the lead when following a good build up Marc Allen beat Symon Winnan.
Tony Symons came to Town's rescue when he tipped Matt Potts' header around the post, but Athletic never gave up the game and Steve Brewer's back heel from David Thompson's corner was cleared off the line.
Another corner by Thompson brought Athletic their equaliser when Steve Brewer's header found the corner of the net.
Athletic still had time to win it, but Steve Brewer's shot from Nathan Grimshaw's cross struck the woodwork.
In a frantic finish Potts saw his goal-bound shot saved by Symons and Kneebone's header from a corner just cleared the bar.
Athletic: S Winnan, K Davis, W Scoley, M Brewer, N Grimshaw, P Kneebone, S Warr, S Halford, D Thompson, S Owen, S Brewer. Subs: D Martin, L Jeffery, M Potts.
