FALMOUTH TOWN 4
MULLION 1
FALMOUTH Town shook off their recent poor run of results with an encouraging 4-1 win at home to Mullion in the Jolly's Combination League.
A poor first half performance did not suggest that such an emphatic win was on the cards, but Town sorted out their problems at the break and finished deserving winners.
"The first half was as poor as we have played all season," said Town's Duncan Gillett. "We couldn't keep the ball and didn't threaten their goal, but in the second half everyone responded well.
"Everyone worked for each other and we played as a team, so it was very pleasing."
With nothing of note in the opening 45 minutes, Town had to wait just five minutes into the second half to open the scoring when Bobby Bryant knocked a ball over the Mullion defence for Nathan McIntosh to give the 'keeper no chance with his finish.
Ten minutes later clever play by Bryant in the corner of the box saw him beat a defender and cross for Luke Appleton to flick the ball into the corner of the net for a good finish.
An injury to McIntosh brought on manager Phil Shapcott, but it was Mullion who grabbed a crucial first goal when Matt Fox, always a danger to Town, was brought down in the box by Ross Bowden. Jason Robertson took the spotkick and made no mistake.
The goal sparked Mullion's best spell in the game as Town were put under pressure, but they worked their way back into the game and snapped up a third goal when Bryant ran on to Darren Friend's through ball and held off a defender before slipping the ball into the corner of the net.
Ten minutes from time Town completed a satisfying second half with a fourth goal. Shapcott was denied a goal by a bobbly surface in a one on one with the 'keeper, but from the corner Shapcott wasn't to be denied as he stabbed the ball home.
On Saturday Town visit Truro City in a Supplementary Cup tie.
