FALMOUTH A' 3pts

ST DAY 23pts

This was a clear-cut Merit Table victory for St Day which confirmed the belief that youth, enthusiasm and speed are no match for teamwork, strength and experience when it comes to playing rugby.

Falmouth had several opportunities during the match which should have produced points, but an obvious lack of cohesion prevented the killer blow, while St Day, with their heavy, lumbering pack, took their time, kept possession and notched up the scores.

Falmouth started brightly enough and were 3-0 up very quickly after Matt Biggins dropped a goal with a neat chip from 20 yards, but from then on St Day were the only side to trouble the scoreboard attendants. Jason Caruana, a lively scrum-half, was soon selling outrageous dummies and sending in Kevin Pooley for an unconverted try and Anthony Caruana, who had an outstanding game at Number 8, got the touchdown from a pushover try to make the half-time score 3-10.

Falmouth were making breaks by Danny Trick, Ben Woodman and Gareth Leaver from loose play situations, but plentiful support was lacking and attacks faded away.

St Day relied on their pack to keep the ball away from the Falmouth "fliers" and went further ahead with a long dropped goal by Jason Caruana and a typical forward try by prop Darren Lawry after a controlled rolling maul.

At 3-18 the gap had opened and Falmouth were unable to respond with scores of their own. Eventually centre Damian Stoddern broke through for St Day's final try after good preparatory work by the half-backs to make it 3-23 at the final whistle.

Next Saturday Falmouth A' are away to Perranporth for their final Merit Table game of the season. This is a rearranged fixture which means that there is no game at the Recreation Ground.
