EVERGREEN Bill Hannaford - who had a handicap of five in a previous life - won the David Sadler memorial trophy at Budock Vean Golf Club on Sunday with a superb net 64, including a birdie two at the ninth.
Like a fine wine Bill is certainly improving with age, as it is the third time he has won this prestigious event since 2002 and once again his gross of 83 was equal to his age. A remarkable achievement in golf. In his acceptance speech Bill quipped: "I'm not proud of it!"
Runner up was vice-captain Colin Parsons with a fine net 65 and Rob Gibson took third place on countback from John Craig, both carding net 67s.
Despite a near perfect day a lot of the scoring was dire as once again a third of the field were swallowed up by the course and failed to return a score.
The solitary "back nine" two's jackpot was won by three handicapper Michael Hayes at the 15th.
The trophy was presented by former USA tour professional Richard Sadler who played at Budock Vean for many years, having started at the club as a 10 year old and among a whole list of honours represented England Youth whilst playing at Budock Vean.
Richard was accompanied by his brothers Peter, also a more than useful single figure handicapper, and younger brother, Mick.
On Wednesday the ladies competed for the Read Salver foursomes on what proved another difficult day for scoring despite good weather. Nalda Grimmer and Mae Brown deservedly won with 29 points. Second was Shirley Mildren and Pat Kirkham and in third place Pam Toy and Philipa Oliver.
On Sunday the monthly medal is kindly sponsored by Falmouth Oil Services.
