THE Falmouth Seniors Open Charity Day proved to be a resounding success, with 132 senior golfers coming from far and wide to take part in the two-ball better-ball Stableford competition.
Falmouth seniors captain, Des Britton, was delighted with the support and thanked all the competitors for their generosity with a splendid £823 raised on the day for Des's chosen charity Cystic Fibrosis. This effort brings the total raised so far this year to over £1,000!
There were prizes for nearest the pin on the second and 11th holes and nearest the pin in two shots on the 12 hole. T Stackwood got nearest the pin on the second and P Wrake was nearest on the 11th hole. Nearest the pin with the second shot on the 12th hole was won by P Tunnicliff.
The eventual winners of the competition were J Barton and G Buck of Falmouth with a splendid 47 points, A. Kearney and A. Neal for Tehidy clinched second spot after count-back of the back nine holes with 45 points. Senior Captain Des Britton playing with his friend, J. Price from Lansdown, were third with 45 points.
Results - 1, J. Barton and G. Buck (Falmouth) 47pts; 2, A Kearney and A. Neil (Tehidy), 45pts; 3, Des Britton and J. Price (Falmouth and Lansdown), 45pts; 4, Ted Semley and K Salmon (Merlin), 44pts; 5, G. Parker and J. Weaver (West Cornwall) 44pts.
The qualifying round of the CGU Goblets took place at Falmouth Golf Club on Saturday played under four-ball format with the top four going through to the finals played at Perranporth Golf Club during County Week.
Conditions were good although the more exposed back nine holes were difficult with a gusty wind to contend with.
Gareth Hudson and Tristan Rowe returned the best score of the day with a nett 66.5, Paul Skinner and Martin Mullins were second with 70.5, Robert Edwards and Alan Goldsmith were third with 70.5 and Ross Durkin and John Ratcliff were fourth with a nett 71.
Two players had particularly bad luck, Tim Edgerton and Mike Sawden were having a storming round until they reached the 17 hole. They only needed to par the last two holes (which was well within their ability) to record easily the best score of the day, but alas disaster struck and they recorded a 15 on the 17th hole. Despite this they still managed a nett 75.5.
