PENRYN ATHLETIC 2

MILLBROOK 4

THIS was another disappointing result for Penryn Athletic who went down to a Millbrook side who claimed only their third Carlsberg SWL away success of the season with a 4-2 win at Kernick Road.

What made the result even more difficult to accept was the fact that victory for the visitors ended a miserable run of eight successive defeats.

With Athletic looking virtually certainties to be in the new South West Peninsula League at Christmas, that now looks a forlorn hope as the best that Athletic can probably hope for now is 12th place.

With joint managers Les Gilbert on holiday and Matt Salmon moving house, Steve Jewell took on the role of manager as well as being named as one of the substitutes.

Things didn't look to be going too badly for Athletic when they took the lead in the sixth minute - Ben Goldring making the running for Steve Rowson to score from close range - but it was one of few highlights for the supporters to enjoy.

Within two minutes Millbrook were back on level terms when Mike Cain was caught out and his attempted recovering tackle leading to a penalty for the visitors. Robbie Stephens made no mistake with the spotkick, but Chris Symons was unlucky as although he stopped the shot its momentum took the ball into the other side of the goal.

Athletic's makeshift striker, Lee Bradd, had a half chance when he powered his way through but saw his shot blocked and the Tamarsiders had a looping header by Tony Hendy ruled out for offside.

Millbrook edged in front at the start of the second half when Stephens burst through the middle to score, but after struggling to make any impact Athletic started to gain some momentum.

The equaliser came from a Dean Harris corner that was headed back across the goal by Ben Goldring for reserve team striker Steve Brewer to head home.

Athletic appeared to have the game under control, but they were mugged again when Millbrook struck with a raid on the flank that saw Gary Bridgeman break clear and beat Symons with his shot at the near post.

Athletic had a great chance to level the scores when the visitors' defence was opened up, but Dale Band placed his shot wide of the upright.

The nail in the coffin was delivered in the 85th minute when Joe Truelove gained possession and ran through to beat Symons.

On SaturdayAtheltic are away to title-chasing Liskeard Athletic.
