TRURO School’s netball teams are currently in the final stages of training and preparation as they look ahead to the South-West regional tournament on Saturday, January 30.
Described as a "golden generation" by their PE teachers, the Under 14, 16 and 18 teams all put in impressive performances to qualify through their respective county tournaments back in November.
Looking forward with anticipation, Mrs Newton, Head of Netball at Truro School, said: “I think it is very unusual for a school to get all three possible age groups through to the regional tournament. In the past we have had one or two teams qualify for the regionals, but never a clean sweep!”
All three teams play this year’s regional finals in Camborne; 160 miles closer than last year’s journey to Bournemouth.
On the day, each age group will be divided into two groups of seven teams with only two spaces available in the national finals (one for each of the group winners).
The girls can expect fierce competition when they head out on court with big netball teams standing in their way such as Millfield, who progressed to last year’s national finals in all three age groups.
Under 18s team captain Rianna Snow said: “I personally have made it to the regionals twice before but failed to get through to the nationals. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is our year”.
The Truro School Under 14s team qualified for the regional tournament back in November following success in the county championship.
After starting their campaign with four consecutive group wins, the girls were almost undone by a sharp Budehaven side in a closely contested 9-8 victory.
A 9-5 semi-final triumph over inter-city rivals Truro High School meant that the girls secured one of two places in the regional finals along with finalists Penryn College. Truro School went on to beat Penryn 4-2 in the final to be crowned county champions.
Taking the Under 16s age group by surprise, Truro School ended Penair’s four year spell as county champions.
Following four straight group wins and a comfortable 16-2 semi-final victory, the stage was set for a tense final against the reigning champions.
The squad were determined to take the title and produced their best netball in a very tense game to emerge victorious, winning 9-5.
Following in the footsteps of the two younger age groups, the Under 18s also finished top of their group and went on to defeat Helston in the semi-finals at the end of November.
Despite losing to Truro College in the final, the girls still qualified for the regionals as county runners up.
