The cool, calm and cloudy conditions attracted a large field of 134 runners to the Enys Estate, near Penryn on Sunday morning for the seventh Enys 10K road race, organised by the Rotary Club of Penryn.
Tristran Sellors led the way on this challenging course as the leaders headed towards Carclew (2 miles).
The Mounts Bay Harrier, who moved back to Penzance a couple of months ago after living across the Tamar and running for South Devon AC for many years, was still leading at the top of the toughest hill on the course (4 miles) but beginning to slow. A cautious start from Tom Carthey (Falmouth Road Runners), who with his partner Ryan Hanley, finished second in the pairs competition in the Kernow Vertical Kilometre 15 mile race in the St Agnes area on the previous day, sensed Sellors was tiring and despite not surprisingly tiring himself, summoned enough energy to pass the Sellors, crossing the line eighteen seconds clear of the Penzance Runner.
Falmouth’s Steve Strachan ran strongly to clinch third position, thirty two seconds ahead of sixteen year old Penryn College student Sam Goodchild (Cornwall AC), who continues to show great promise on the road, in fourth place.
On the previous day Goodchild was racing at Exeter Racecourse, helping his club team to win the Under 17 title in the South West Road Relay Championships.
Carthey and Strachan were both anxiously waiting for the third Falmouth runner in the team competition and when Robin Watson came into view in 14th place, the relief showed on their faces, as Falmouth (18 points) took the honours ahead of Cornwall AC (27 points), with Truro Running Club (52 points) third.
Donna Raggett retained her individual title, completing a highly successful weekend for the Cornwall AC runner, who was also competing at Exeter Racecourse on the previous day and was part of another Cornwall AC winning team in the Senior Ladies race at the South West Road Relay Championships.
Beth Popperwell (Mile High) who won this race in 2012, finished second, almost a couple of minutes behind Raggett, with a new name on the local running scene, Sarah Hoskin (Mile High) third, just two seconds behind Popperwell.
History was made in the ladies' team competition with the ladies from Mile High achieving their first ever win in an open road race team competition and doing it in style, with Popperwell and Hoskin joined by Amy Blackburn (5th) for a very low team score of ten points and a collective team time of 2hours 15 minutes 37 seconds, over eighteen minutes faster than the collective team time of second placed Falmouth Road Runners ( 45 points), with Cornwall Athletic Club third on 65 points.
There were age group wins for Strachan (40-49), Popperwell (35-44) and the Falmouth Road Runner Jackie Cope (60+), with Mabe school teacher Julia Pearce finishing fourth overall and second in the 35-44 category. Hannah Fox was third in the 35-44 section, with the Falmouth Road Runners, Jennie Merillion and David Wilton also third in their respective 45-49 and 60-64 age groups.
Race Director, Terry Chapman said, "On behalf of the Rotary Club of Penryn, I'd like to thank all those who took part or helped organise our very successful Enys 10k run. The perfect weather conditions may have helped but we had a great turn-out for a tough yet increasingly popular event. With a big field and the support of our sponsors Kimberley's and Theobald's, plus the practical support of Andyloos, we're hoping to have raised in the region of a fantastic £2000 to be split between this year's three nominated charities; Cornwall Down's Syndrome Support Group, Cornwall Search and Rescue, who provided our first aid cover, and Rotary's campaign to End Polio Now."
