BY the end of this week the summer bowling season will have come to an end, with the last of the county competitions finals being resolved.
Greens will then undergo drastic measures to enable the grass to be in good condition for Easter 2008. This will involve scarifying, hollow tyning, raising ends of greens and a general club overhaul with many volunteers required to do odd jobs and painting around the club area.
However, Falmouth will not have these green problems - just an occasional hoover, as play will continue through until Easter 2008 with the Tuesday morning Ladies' Triples League and the Sunday morning Men's Triples League, plus Falmouth also have visiting teams well into October.
The club surrounds will be smartened up and the seats and general play area will receive some treatment, all in readiness for next year's Falmouth's 100th birthday, the centenary year.
There is an exciting programme of events being planned to celebrate this unique occasion, culminating in the visit of the Bowls England team, previously known as the EBA (English Bowling Association), but with the unification of the ladies and men, a mixed team will be visiting Falmouth.
The programme of events will be published in the early spring 2008. Looking back over the past season, Falmouth's record has not been brilliant but there has been a new club record set with the promotion of the C team to the Premier league, which means Falmouth will now have three teams in this league.
With this in mind and with numerous visiting teams in the centenary year, Falmouth would really welcome more players to boost their ranks to fulfil all their commitments, so anyone fancying bowls in the Premier league or anyone who wishes to take up bowls, do not hesitate to contact the club where free coaching courses are available. You will be made most welcome.
Falmouth has had its successes. As mentioned before, the C team won League Two and were in the county finals on Saturday at St Stephens where they had to play Penlee B in the semi final. Unfortunately they were beaten on all three rinks and ended the day in fourth place.
Falmouth's Strollers' have again won their league for the fourth time under the guidance of Mike Ogden who does such sterling work in this league. Mike encourages new bowlers and non league bowlers to come and have a go in this league, which is a good schooling for playing in more serious leagues and offers an insight into team bowling, meeting new friends. Mike also lets players play in various positions, keeping their interest thirsty for knowledge of team bowling.
Falmouth Ladies evening Triples team have won their league again. The ladies work by day and therefore cannot commit themselves to Date and Rippon leagues in the afternoons.
Falmouth have had divisional winners in Tom Reid, winning the Secretaries' Cup, but unfortunately in the county finals he was beaten in the semi finals.
Likewise in the Captain's Shield, Falmouth won the division with John Bobin (vice-captain), Tom Reid (men's sec), Doug Travers (executive) and Ron Medlyn (capt), but went out in the semi final to Camborne. After leading 17-7 they fell away to lose 20-25.
In the Ladies section, Liz Maunder and Maureen Edwards reached the semi-finals in the pairs competition as did Josie Ogden and Jackie Medlyn in the over 55 pairs championships.
The club has raised quite a substantial amount of money for charities this year, mainly for cystic fibrosis and the latest charity to benefit was the Children's Hospice South West. A day's fun was held on August Bank Holiday and a sum of £326 was raised.
A big thank you goes to everybody who took part in raising the money plus the local companies who supported the event by donating cash, goods and services for the raffle.
The photograph shows the club captain, Maureen Edwards handing over the cheque and cash to Mary Murfin, the local co-ordinator for CHSW surrounded by members of the Falmouth bowling club.
