MAWNAN Bowling Club began their week with a visit from a mixed touring side from Banbury who were able to enjoy a pleasant and sunny afternoon, writes Tony Stevenson.

The touring party were greeted by the club captain Malcolm Dearnley who welcomed them to Cornwall in general and to Mawnan Smith in particular.

Four sets of fours began in a very friendly atmosphere. Pat Paget's rink set off with high expectations but fell behind from the first end, losing the ring by 13 shots.

Phil Dunstone's rink made a good start leading 8-0 after only four ends, but a strong fight back by Banbury put them in the lead after 18 ends, wining the rink by two shots.

Jack Gretton's rink led from the first end and maintained their lead winning the rink by 19 shots.

Malcolm Dearnley's rink lost the first end and won the next seven ends in a low scoring match, leading 8-5 after 10 ends, but went on to win by eight shots.

The match was won by Mawnan, but the visiting side won two out of the four rinks so honours were fairly even in this very enjoyable match.

The club's internal matches resulted in a win for Malcolm Dearnley over Jack Gretton in the men's benevolent pairs and John Paget and Jenny Dunstone played John Oldcroft and Pat Paget in the finals of the mixed pairs. After a close match the title was settled on the last end with a win for John Oldcroft and Pat Paget.

Sunday was Captain's Day and almost all of Mawnan's members turned out for drinks on the terrace followed by lunch in the clubhouse which was a great success. Lunch was followed by six teams of triples playing each other in a four ends only competition.

Laughter could be heard across the green all afternoon (just shows you what a glass or two of wine can do before a match), and the top team was Keith Penrose, Linda Story and Jenny Dunstone, closely followed by Pat Paget, Chris Gee and Jill Yearsley. The match was followed by tea and presentations.

The whole afternoon proved a wonderfully successful competition which was organised by the two club captains, Malcolm Dearnley and Judy Ramsay.
